While swapping out cards at my little woods this weekend I found TWO wild crabapple trees! Both are over 12' tall along the back edge of the woods. I always read where people find wild apple or pear or crabapples on there properties but never thought I would!

That looks more like a Hawthorne or thorn apple of some type. Not an apple or pear. Nice find.

Could be...had a three lobed leaf kind of like a sargent crab?

Nice find. It looks like a hawthorn to me and definitely worth keeping. Most of the hawthorns here have long, sharp thorns/Spurs on them so if you look close you might see them too. It has been a good year for hawthorns here in se mn and they all seem to hold more fruit than normal.

I have never found any either. I am assuming the only way to tell is by walking around this time of year and looking for the fruit?

Spring is a good time to find trees flowering. That is how I realized we had serviceberry trees.

I know a guy (lets call him John) who swore he had NO OAKS on a portion of his property as well......um, well when I visited, I seemed to be able to find some, some where nice size as well.....I sure didn't bring them with me! Funny how sometimes you can look right past exactly what you are looking for - for one reason or another.

Pic looks like a hawthorn of some variety. We have Washington Hawthorns at camp and they are a big plus - especially for grouse, turkeys, and other birds.

another vote for hawthorne. When they get older, they can be just as loaded as a crabapple. The ones by me bloom just on the tail end of the crabapple bloom
