Yearling... With promise
Wanted to get some thoughts on a problem I have on a property. I recently purchased 400 acres on the MS River. The main channel of the river is a way from the bank, but when the river gets up the other channel becomes part of the river. There is a island about 1500 yards that separate us until it gets up. I have a camp that will not flood in the air based on the 100 year flood plain, but the problem is the bank is washing. From what I can tell the bank if about 4 feet down. The river hasn’t been down since I got the property to see what else it looks like. Looking for ideas in terms of fixing the bank. My thoughts were some concrete, riprap with some fabric underneath it and slope the bank. Even thought about sheet piling to help. Looking for what would be the cheapest but the best long term solution also. I have attached some pictures of the bank to show what it looks like now. Any other ideas I would appreciate.

No idea how to help, but that's a pretty sweet setup. Welcome to HT

Around my area, one would need to go through the DNR with anything that modified the top of the bank and below. But your ideas are what they would do around here. If the bank is silt, they would lay a fabric down, and dump rock, and old concrete on top of the fabric. I would contact them as a first step, and see what they recommend, and if they will help in the plan, and cost.

I agree with checking with the DNR they control what goes on water ways. If you don't get approval to do the work they can force you to remove.

They also have technical people who can help on best design approach given your situation.

When you state MS River, do you mean Mississippi river? because then you may also have to play the federal games as well. More paperwork, but usually more free money to help pay for it.

Welcome to HT!
I would check with some of the neighbors to see what they have done and ask them who can do the work and what regs there are about it.

Appreciate everybody thoughts on it. I am going to meet the Corps Engineer and get their thoughts.

It’s the MS river, but it’s not the main channel until the river gets high enough to get in the channel.

How’s the hunting there? I’m intrigued by those river properties. They kill some hammers along the ms river and those islands.

I hunt not to far from there now and it’s decent. Lots of deer but our management is not the best from the neighbors. This property has some good neighbors that manage and there should be some studs walking around there. Most of those big river
deer you never hear much about. Be my first season to hunt down there

Well I figured I would give a update. We suppose to start hauling concrete in next week to put on the bank. It was half price of any type of rock. The guy I am using has done a lot of that in this area and said it should work. We just put out cameras and should start having some good stuff on camera. Attached is a few pics from the area.

Did you place that concrete/rock out into the channel? No idea how Mississippi is but I live along the Susquehanna in PA and DEP would be so far up my butt if I did something like that in the river.

Here is aerial of the place. It already had a bunch of stands on the place.

No that was the Corp of Engineers that did that. We are just putting some concrete just on the bank.

Nice looking property, good luck with the project.

Ah ok. Ya your best bet is the concrete protection. You might have to replace it or have an excavator drag it back up occasionally after bigger flooding events. Sheet piling is probably a more permanent solution but it's pretty expensive with the price of steel right now.

That's a nice looking property. I love the island.

I'm wondering if the Corps of Engineers permitting is required and whether it might define your options.

That’s a really cool place. You should be in the middle of some terrific hunting there, with a one-in-a-million campsite, to boot. There are not many spots like that that are not owned by shareholder clubs below Memphis. Being on the banks of the Big Muddy down there is incredible! I didn’t realize that they had carved out smaller tracts from the 1000+ acre piece right there. Good snag!

I’m a hillbilly a few clicks south of you.
