Rattler?

S.T. Fanatic - that pic of those timber rattlers is just how ours look here in Pa. We also have a darker phase known as the "black" phase, although they aren't all black - just darker than your pix. They're darkest near the tail than the head end. Great pix !!
 
Momark is right on the ID. There are several subspecies. What state it was found in may effect the exact ID. This in probably the most common snake that we find in my neck of the woods.
