Lightning strike oak?

I think lightning hit this tree. Don’t know what else could explain this. Blew a strip of bark off 40’ long.

Lucky the place didn't burn to a crisp considering how dry it is!

Yep, I think you are right! I've found similar trees many times. A lot of times the tree lives. Kind of amazing the power it takes to blow chunks of wood out like that.

Yes I would agree lightning. I had a white oak that looked like that after being hit and 50 yards away a fence charger on a post exploded and through pieces in every direction.

Baseball bats, quick!

SD you guessed right. Happens often around here. Last year an oak about 12" through got completely blown apart. Thought it was toast. I cut the trunk off couple feet off the ground. It sprouted back and is living. I think yours is going to live.

I've never seen that happen to a tree on my property. I guess there's a benefit to being in a wind farm. Those big spinning lightening rods do some good!

Agree it looks like a lightning strike. I've seen it on a few trees in the woods here. Lightning struck a huge white pine at camp & blew a big section of trunk and large limbs off - and it's still standing & green. Your tree should be fine.

A lot of times the lightning will superheat the water in the tree and kill it. Time will tell.
