Pyrus calleryana

TreeDaddy

5 year old buck +
ID'ed this tree by the "Seek" app growing wild in woods on my place

Callery or Bradford pear listed as invasive here and seems pretty worthless for wildlife value

Can this tree be topworked or do i put on my Sweetgum assassin cape and nuke it with Remedy?

thanks,

bill

Absolutely can be top worked. Best bet is an Asian variety, but many European types will also work. What is the diameter of the trunk?

I’m planning on top working some over to useful verities myself this spring.

That's a great candidate for a bark graft.

I used to graft just above the lowest nurse limb, but that has given me rather high grafts, and calleryana likes to throw a lot of growth. From now on I will try to do a bark graft low on the tree near the ground and then top the tree down to the lowest nurse limb. Then I will remove the rest of the tree above the graft after it takes.
