If you made me guess I would say that diameter is between 30-36 inches. Next time I get a chance I will have to measure it.

The woods was select cut logged in 2011, before we bought it. According to one of the old neighbors it had copious amounts of oak. This one is almost in the center of the property and towards the top of a small hill. Such a beautiful tree I don't think they had the heart to cut it down and left it as a parent tree. They must have done multiple rounds of logging in the woods. There are a handful of other big ones like this that also got spared in the past.

My Rusk County Wisconsin place was logged before I bought it in 2006, and it looks similar to yours. They clear cut the aspen and random trees, but left a handful of mature red pines and oaks. I only have a couple of the northern red oaks there, but they produce some impressive crops occasionally. I watched a family of bears feed under a red oak a few years back during the gun deer season.

This is the red oak pictured above..... Big fat sow and 2 of her cubs. The third cub got left behind and nearly ran my nephew over in the confusion. We were working in the woods and nearly ended up on top of them. They ran off 50 yards and climbed up the tree. Then as we left we went right under them and she started snorting and blowing at us. An experience I'm not likely to forget.

Yep. It's about time for me to do that for the season. Haven't had any ticks yet here in Sota but it's only a matter of time.

Would you do it for toddler clothes as well? I'm more worried about my girls when they are out with Dad than me.

I do a lot of work to keep my trails wide and clean. When it gets to tick season, If I have to go bombing around in the bush, I'm pretty quick to check myself coming out the other side. I think we might be in a lighter tick year because of drought and little snow cover.

I learned some new forest words last night: pillows and cradles. This is a forester word for the dirt orientation left over after a tree has uprooted decades before. The tree is long gone but the hole and hump remains. I need to find some spots like that and plunk a red on some mounds.

Deer here use those "pillows & cradles" for secure bedding spots on slopes in our mountains. They lay so they can just see down-slope for danger while staying out of sight. Fox-holes of a sort for the deer. I've learned this by accidental discovery. Just a hint ......

ITs not hard to sway a deer into a bedding spot you make.

Ticks........ Got to be honest, I try to do everything in the winter while they're dormant. At camp I have yet to see one, but winter keep getting moren n more milder. Only a matter of time.

Permetherin, Seen ticks crawl right on me while drneched in that stuff. I tuck my socks over my pants, tuck my shirt in my pants. Clean up right afterwards. Dryers do not kill ticks. Seen them crawling on my hunting clothers after taking them out of the dryer.

There is only one tree I want from seed. Not sure if it's local conditions or what. There is a shag hickory tree that holds nuts well into november. Not used to seeing that many that late. That tree might even hold them to december. Keeping an eye out for it. Right by my treestand and a few apple trees I planted there.

Tempted to gt some swamp whites at camp, but feel burr has a better chance in zone 3. next year it's oaks, grey dogwood, and a few seedling red splendor crabs at camp.


I do small slash piles like that at camp. About 2.5-3ft of 4ft tall 1/4" mesh to keep the rabbits away and them a messy pile of branches. I leave one corner a bit cleaner for pruning access.

I try a bunch of things in small amounts at camp. Giving those guys a shot. Should have 35-40 apple trees in the ground by the end of this summer up there. Time to focus on browse and hard mast.
