Preventing EHD

I found this article:

Seems like tanks or tubs would be a "safe" option. I wonder if hydrogen peroxide added to dug ponds would increase oxygen to that water.

We have regular EHD outbreaks here in VA. The acute aspect of the disease seems to be cyclical. While we can have hot, dry summers, we have lots of natural water sources for deer. While I have seen some water sources similar to those describe in the article put in by cattle farmers, they make up a tiny fraction of water sources. Most deer managers don't need to add water sources for deer.

While it does make sense to consider midges as part of best practices when adding an artificial water source, I doubt we could do much to control the disease in our area.

Thanks,

Jack

I agree with the best practices consideration. That is why it was offered. Still curious if some knowledgeable person could comment on hydrogen peroxide as a method to effect the low oxygen in ponds and possibly effect the midge population.
