And sometimes wonder what chemicals and plastics were used in some of that old carpet
You're the first person to mention plastics going into the environment. I thought I was missing something, as all the landscape fabric I have seen is made of plastic, and basically comes apart over the years and is nearly impossible to completely remove. I am constantly finding shreds of plastic weedmats in the flower beds around the house from the previous owners. This has prevented me from using it long-term for anything.
I've used carpet before, and it became a mess of weeds and roots that was a bummer to remove. I have the same long-term concerns with plastic as I do with weed Mats. Wool carpet works well, but it can be difficult to find for free.
