Cages, weed mats and mulch

Have you noticed bears hammering them?? We just planted about 1 dozen at camp ....... and we have bears. I hope we can grow them up to a size that they can survive bears & feed other critters / birds.

Bears demolish choke cherry in my neck of the woods. So do grouse. Fun as hell to watch them in the deer stand. I have a good grouse and bear population in the area. My land would be excellent grouse hunting. I'm gonna get a bunch of mine cleared out and put on cages, etc. See how it goes. They are all naturally occurring, except a few that my brother planted. Maybe 4 of them survived.

I did find a chokecherry approximately 30 feet tall and its kinda tucked under the canopy of some really nice red oaks. Easily the oldest one I have noticed on my property.

I would like the actual nuts.

I bought a bare root beaked hazelnut and it’s growing. I have started several regular hazelnuts.

the cows don’t seem to want to graze them so I would like to plant more.

Thanks

I looked all over my woods. There wasn't one single beaked hazel nut left anywhere. 1,000s of them disappeared in the last month. The critters have them all cleaned up. Choke cherry was completely gone too.

I feel better, I couldn’t find one freaking hazel nut in oregon/Washington ……poof they be gone!

begining to doubt if I knew what a filbert was.

If you need cages Blain's has theirs on sale. I used this add from Blain's last week and got Tractor supply to price match on 4 rolls of the 4 foot cage. Wish I had more room in my truck cause I would have bought 2 rolls of 5 foot. Some of the best prices I have seen in the past 2 years. The stuff pretty much doubled during the Xiden presidency. SMFH...

Has anyone seen any sales on welded wire/cage ?

I would just try calling the places you used before. All metal pricing has come down in the last year or so.

Here it is for $107/roll of the 5X150' after the rebate:

I don't think I'd be more jealous of you if you showed me your bank stament with 5 million in it.

That is outstanding!

Been buying the wire from Menards that Hoytvectrix linked above. Best price I have found.

Menards has also ran sales in the past on fiberglass driveway markers that would work for stakes.
I buy a bundle every year for use with tree tubes. The last two years they have gone on clearance for $1.20/6ft stake. I think they're perfect for supporting the tubes. I also use them when marking out areas to spray or to plant.

Thoughts on chicken wire?

Can work, but needs more support. I bought hundreds of feet of 4,5 and 6ft fencing on craigslist last year. The last 5-30ft of the rolls on a gentelman's farm fencing job. Mostly 2x4, but there's other stuff I found useful too. like 3ft tall mesh ends.

A cheap, B keeps critters away, thats the plan.

I debate about using pressure treated wood for stakes, got lots of leftover pieces from a decking job. Just wonder if it bothers tree roots.

Keep your eye out in october and november for mulch deals. I has getting 2 cuft bags for $1 each. Try my best to wipe them out with a 1/2 ton truck.

Chicken wire works covering the wide fence.

Here are two ROD planted 20' apart at the same time, one was caged and the other wasn't. Fortunately some of my cages have advanced shrubs far enough I'm able to recycle them for use on more shrubs/conifers.

My brother spotted some dogwoods on my place this weekend. I tried to put 4 cages around a nice cluster and put down some weed suppression. The ground was still frozen and it didn't work very good. I'm gonna go back later this year and put one big cage around this cluster. They look primed to blast off. Probably put down some real mulch. The local herd has been keeping them pruned.

Had my 10 foot ruler out this weekend and made about 50 new cages. I used all 4 foot wire this time. Made 40 of them with 10 feet of roll. I also made 10 of them with 5 feet of roll. If you look close I have a 5' mark on that board. I'm gonna use the 10 small ones for some flame willows this spring. All I use is the roll, my ruler and my Irwin snips. The Irwin snips is still performing flawlessly. It goes quick for me to make cages. I prefer to try and unroll the entire roll very close to where the cages are going.

Three years of growth, that's a 5' cage. ^^
That's a great picture to show the benefits of caging. Once they reach that size, they should be able to hold their own. I've been trying to get trees and shrubs through the cage stage as quickly as possible so I can reuse the cages for the next group of trees.

I’ve been caging wild dogwood clusters for a few years now. They come like crazy once they’re protected. Outgrow every cage I’ve put on them. I should really go out and double the size of those cages to see what they can really do.

I’m starting to get way ahead of the deer on browse, so much so there is more and more dogwood not getting browsed. Lots of top choice browse not getting hit.

These are all unprotected dogwoods, with the exception a few that are guarded by big piles of brush and logs. But most are an easy steal and unharmed.
