Plot Mix Planting Question

OK. I have two plots I will be planting for the fall. A 2 acre and a 1 acre. I plan on planting a clover mix, chicory, daikon radish, and rye grain. The land is in east North Carolina. Zone 6 I believe. Question is when should I plant? I know you usually don't plant grains until later September or even October but what happens to everything else if I wait that late? Should I plant the other mix earlier and then over seed with the rye?

That's what I would do. If you don't go too heavy on the seeding there should be room left. The other option would be to plant the rye in a separate area of the field. Maybe mix oats with the rye too.

You should plant each at the proper time to get what you want. Rassica typically like at least 60 growing days while the rye if planted too early could become too mature for the deer. I would plant everything else in early fall and then come back and add the rye later.

The rye was going serve as a nurse crop for everything else. Any suggestions to plant with the mix instead of the rye?

Oats. Oats will grow well and act as a nurse crop as well. Once the freeze hits them they will die.....then you can over seed rye if you want to have a cereal grain that will stay green. Just get cheap oats (should be able to find 2 bushel bags for less than $10). Just my 2 cents worth.
