Anybody know what would happen if I planted spring tritacale in the fall. Will it grow ok for a fall plot? Not comeback again in the spring?I really wanted to do a August planting of 4010 peas and tritacale, but I just noticed it just says tritacale ( not winter) and suggest to plant it in the spring. The other place I get winter tritacale is sold out. If I have to I could go with rye or ww.

It doesn't say. It just says tritacale. Their winter rye is VNS thou. What does VNS mean?
I knew there was spring wheat and winter wheat. I saw on deer creeks website that they are sold out of winter tritacale but have spring tritacale. That's what made me check and I'm pretty sure it is spring tritacale cause they only list a spring planting date.

I awarded myself a Phd in small grains, but I can't answer that question. There's not a great single place to know all that is trit. And triticale is as specific as apple. There's spring grains, winter grains, and here's a mind blower, facultative grains. There are facultative trits out there too.
If you didn't get stuck with too many bags, I might take the L, and try to get your hands on the right seed between now and fall. Where are you located? Maybe we can help you find another source. What you do have, maybe blend it into your fall plots anyway, but don't pull an SD and put down 15 bushels per acre.

Good info SD. Always learn alot on this site. I wonder what kind of look I will get when I ask if their trit is facultative. Lol I live in SE WI but my land is way up in NW WI almost 5hrs away. I did try winter triticale years ago from. Deer creek and it did well. I was going to stop at elk mound feed and pick up some triticale/ 4010 pea mix and plant in fall. Thanks Sketter. That answered all the questions I had. I had a hunch that it might not winter over. I will probably hold off on the spring tritacale. I sure like my winter rye greening up before anything else in spring, and so do the deer and turkey.

Oh yeah, conventional pea/trit is geared towards big fast forage for cattle. Now, that being said, I think you have a genius idea in doing winter trit and a winter pea together for balance and tonnage into next year. It’d be damn neat to see.

I don’t know enough about them to say. I know there was one guy on this site that got peas to overwinter and come up big as $hit in the spring, but his deer never ate them. I don’t recall the rest of the circumstances.

They won't regrow in spring where I am , too far north. I do believe in the states farther south they do. I broadcast mine they do great.
That might of been me with the peas your referring to. I planted a cover crop of oats and peas and a 1/2 acre of straight 4010 peas. They looked awsome. They were 2 ft tall with pods, but nothing was hitting them in the summer. I went back up later and they were destroyed. Completely gone like you couldn't tell there was ever peas planted.
