Paw paw from seeds

A month later, they are putting on a little growth. The 3 planted into 1 quart RB2s have done better than those in the smaller RM18s. Still have half a tray that still have the seed attached and more that are just a stem where everything above rotted off with the seed. As long as they stay green, I'll keep watering them and let them decide if they want to live or not. Some that rotted where stuck in the seed have pushed leaves from the good portion of the stem or one sent up a new stem.

The largest ones will get planted out soon in my backyard. I'll eventually graft them to named varieties. I have room for 5 or 6 trees. The rest will probably get planted on my folks farm, likely after they go dormant this fall.

Very nice. I need to take a picture of the ones I planted from the RB2s in the field this spring.

I happened to be at the farm today and got a chance to grab a picture of one of the pawpaws. I was not shooting for maximum growth with these. I was more concerned with photosensitivity in the first two years. So, I kept them in 1 gals for the entire first season on my lower shaded deck. I overwintered them in the 1 gals. Last spring I transplanted them to 3 gal RB2s and kept them on that same lower deck. I planted them in the field last fall. Of 23, it looks like I had 4 that failed. I previously reported 5 failures but one of those that did not leaf out resprouted from the roots so I'm not counting that as a failure. At any rate, here is the picture of one of them taken today:
