A parking lot tree. Two yrs in a row that it was loaded with acorns during Christmas shopping. Would be nice to have a December dropper!
Anyone know what it is?

Shumard oak?

The leaf looks like a red oak to me. Those are nice sized acorns for a red oak though.

To add to that - black oaks I believe are considered a red oak. The pointed leaves are the indicator. Unusual to have it have a good crop in successive years I think. Every other year would seem more typical.

Thanks for the replies. They are much larger than the red or pin oaks I have native. And holding a ton later. I love to hunt the late season, having a cluster of these on the place would be awesome!

I picked up a hand full and float tested them. 37 sinkers to play with.
Anyone know the likelihood of getting offspring that are somewhat true to the parent with these?

If they are a hybrid or a black oak, will they need cold stratification?

It is definitely from the red oak family with the pointed leaves, so stratification is a must. That said, looking at the leaf and the size of the acorns, I would say Shumard was a good guess. I lived in the land of black oaks and of all the ones I have seen, those would be the grand champion of black oak acorns, I have never seen a black oak with acorns near that size. Those are the size of the northern red oak acorns that grow in our area.
