To spray or not to spray…

Cool Hand Luke

5 year old buck +
I had a great kill last fall on a majority of the old pasture grass I’m trying to set back into early succession. However did miss some areas. Should I hit them now or wait again and do it after a frost or two. The grass that came back is loaded with clover. Too early to tell what the open areas are going to turn into, looks like a bunch of thistles for sure.

Look at the height difference in pic 2. That just gives you an idea of how much it did set back the growth with last years spraying.

Nice kill!
If the forbes are already up and growing, I would wait until the fall (assuming you are using gly). I usually hit the cool season grasses after a couple frosts, or a couple weeks into spring greenup, before the broadleaves are up.

I'd wait as well. I sprayed some areas a few weeks ago that I missed last fall and it isn't going to kill it. This fall I will do it again and I'm sure it will do the trick.

Unwanted plants going to seed over summer, loading seed bank for another year??? Just asking - no experience with that kind / timing of spraying.

I was assuming cool season grasses so the seeds probably wouldn't germinate until fall and you could nuke all the little guys with properly timed spraying I think.

I believe you’re right T! That’s why I was leaning towards holding off. It was pretty substantial what that late fall spraying did last year. All of the property would’ve been nothing but knee high grass. Glad I read books every now and again.
