not planting trees right away

This may be a dumb question but here goes anyway.

Will a tree bought now but not planted last through the winter in the container you buy it in? This is in Minnesota so the winters are cold.

Bury it and mulch, otherwise it will die above ground.

Another option:

If you have an unheated, detached building you can put it in there. Just water it a couple of times throughout the winter.

I often store potted plants in the basement of the cabin and they make it all winter just fine. It helps that I don't heat the cabin very many days a winter. If I did I think they would not make it.

I think I may have to bury them. I have an un heated portable shed (tarp kind) but that is basically like being outside. Thanks for the help.

I do this every year but group them together and burry them in my garden. Before they leaf out I plant them in their final home. Just to leave them out I think they would be toast but I could be wrong.

I didn't have much luck leaving my chestnut trees in my garage. Half of them died.
