Newbie Land Tour

What rig you runnin' there Newbs?

Mahindra 4550. Picked it up brand new leftover model. It doesn’t have many of the bells and whistles you’d expect from a modern tractor but it’s an absolute workhorse. Like a 2024 version of a tractor built in the 80s hahah. IMG_0802.jpeg
I’ve dug some pretty massive stumps in my backyard with the backhoe & hauled them out on the front loader (got a 3rd function kit for a grapple).

Overall I’m pretty happy with it, I hope to have it many many many years.

Very nice my friend! I bet that backhoe is super useful!

That hoe would be a time (and back!) saver for planting 5' to 8' fruit or nut trees!! Nice rig, Newbie!

And weren’t you concerned about numbers earlier this year? Cmon Newbie. Take the high fence down! Good grief, I have never seen that many deer, ever! Get some trailcams up dude!

Still waiting on some good target buck but we have no shortage of animals. Getting 25-35 deer a night pretty regularly. Got a few decent buck floating around but nothing that has me chomping at the bit yet.

C’mon up to PA and fill your freezer

That's awesome man. May be time to implement some doe management! I've always wanted to visit PA. Pittsburgh is under 8 hours from here. 👍

Archery season opener is this Saturday. Still getting 25+ deer a night. I planted clover chicory rye brassicas and buckwheat - none of it able to get up past 1” of height just due to browse pressure (as you can tell in the second photo). 4 acres mowed down like a golf course. Couple decent buck hanging around but nothing magnificent. Hopefully the doe presence pulls in a couple nice cruisers later in the season.

I pulled my cameras from the homestead and relocated them deep in some big woods public land a few months back. That proved to be a fools errand, but I digress. Anyway, here's a few of the deer I've been seeing routinely on the plot, I sneak out with binoculars a few times a week to watch as they pour in during the evening.

You'll notice these are all velvet pics because I haven't had a cam out in a while. None of them are terribly impressive from a headgear perspective, but they certainly aren't going hungry.

That 6 is a pig and would be my #1 target!

Looks like those bucks are carrying a good % of your food plots in their guts!!! Have a heavy-duty meat pole?? And maybe a winch?? 👀 😲

A big gnarly six has been a dream of mine since I was a kid! Good luck Newbie! He’s a tanker!

Well, I RSVP’d to a wedding earlier this year without looking at the calendar. Turns out it was opening evening of archery so my wife didn’t get to sit last night. Of course, during the reception I get cell cam pics pushed to my phone of a couple shooters walking within 20yd of her stand. 🫠

She’s going to hold out until this coming Friday for her first sit I believe.

In other news, chicory and clover poking through the weeds I pressed down a few weeks ago on the “failed” plot. Glassed 6 buck browsing their way across this field on their way to the big plot.

It’s not your fault. People can be pretty inconsiderate planning things during hunting season. The nerve…

Some pretty country you have there Newbie, looks good. Good luck this season!

Well boys, I’m destined for the dog house! Helped my wife sight in her crossbow yesterday & yours truly sighted in on the wrong pin. She had a good opportunity at a nice 8 this afternoon & shot went way low and had a clean miss. Happy it didn’t end up as a poor hit, but she was bummed nonetheless. She was sure to remind me “I don’t miss, this sight must be off,” a practice shot in the yard confirmed 😂. I tried telling her I didn’t want her season to end too early…. she didn’t buy it. Hoping she connects later this season or I’m afraid I won’t live this one down.

This truly is her first “miss.” She’s a sharp shooter several deviations above of me - hence why I’m always on my best behavior. Maybe I should stick to field work & let her take care of the harvesting 😂

Watch out Newbie - or you might be on the meat pole. Tread lightly!!! Foot massages along with a glass of her fav wine might help ........
