I do not know where you are located, but here is the per acre mix I will be putting out this fall. Keep in mind that I am in central GA, so temps are higher and last longer, so my planting will be mid October. As David H recommended, I will most likely add a couple #'s of turnips and/or daikon radish since this used to be a horse pasture.

Just got my second spray in. Hit the field with gly, 2,4d and sedge hammer this past weekend. As you can see some misses in the first spray 3 weeks ago and some areas with some broadleaf & sedge that needed to be set back. If all goes to plan, will throw/mow/roll around first of August which puts me about 75 days to first frost. Got a clover mix (alsike, med red, crusade white, balansa, ysc, persist red), forb feast chicory, 2bu/acre winter rye, 1bu/acre buckwheat, and a brassica mix. (Threw buckwheat into the mix because I thought I may seed early and thought it might benefit with some shade and browse tolerance during summer but timeline got pushed back. Might throw it just to see what happens may cut it out to not outcompete).
You can see where I was planting spruce screen on the left & left a soft edge along right where it meets the woods (also where I have planted 12 apple varieties & plan to add another 8-10 fruit trees next year).
Decent soil exposure under that standing dead vegetation. Will prob mow 2x to break up the dead thatch after broadcast seeding. Thin line of native grasses along border just to help prevent drift to getting to recently planted trees.
I’m hopeful I end up with a decent field of forage capable of getting some deer onto my property this fall.
Edit: happy to get any feedback from you all if I should alter the plan if necessary

Got everything seeded yesterday but had to quit mowing to get to a family function. Sitting in the garage with my little property manager (4mo old now) while my better half knocks down the rest of the field.
With a timely rain and a stoke of good luck I think we should be in good shape for this fall.
To be honest, couldn’t give an accurate breakdown of what was thrown. I know there was a boatload of clover and chicory, a splash of buckwheat and rye, and smorgashboard of turnips, radishes and other brassicas. We’ll see what does well.
I do know for certain my forearm is tired from holding one of those cheap handheld broadcast seeders & I logged more than a couple miles walking gridlines across that field. Time to upgrade some of the equipment

Looks like your property manager is comfy in his seat, with a good view of the operation!! Fileds look great. Hope you get enough rain to get it all greened-up.
Walking miles to seed with a shoulder-strap crank seeder (Solo poly-tub) .... been there Newbie!! We moved to a powered spin spreader mounted on 4-wheeler these days. Lugging those Solo's loaded with brassica seed - then fertilizer - in late July's heat was tough going.

I’m gonna pickup a solo seeder, I think they’d be pretty handy to have around. I spread a few hundred pounds of seed with one of these little bad boys I had in my garage.
I had multiple 5gal buckets staged throughout the field because I had to refill a few times on each pass
Took a walk past the field earlier today. Was happy to see I’ve already for some signs of liftoff already (seeded 4 days ago) despite not getting any rain yet.
We’ve got an evening shower rolling in now and about 2in of rain on the forecast over the next 48hr. I’m hoping we get some good forage on this field this year.

Hey Newbie -
If you're going to get a Solo broadcast spreader with the hard, poly tub, I'll make a suggestion. before you use it, lay hands on one of those "pool noodles". If the noodle is the kind with a hole going through its length, cut it to a length long enough to cover your shoulders. Thread a piece of small chain through it to make a means to pull the Solo strap through the noodle. It'll save the strap from cutting into your neck & shoulders when walking the fields. Ask me how I learned this trick ........

Nearly 2 weeks since throw/mow. Getting some pretty nice growth so far, you'll see quite a bit of buckwheat clover and brassicas popping up. Interestingly in the first picture you'll see way more broadleaves showing and in the second much more rye with notably less buckwheat, clover and brassica. Both photos were taken this morning on my way to work.
Broadcast rate for the entire field was more/less the same. A few theories came to mind:
1.) This side of the field is a little more shaded and may cause a delay in germination
2.) This side was thicker, resulting in more thatch, which may take more time for seedlings to push through
3.) Since this side was thicker, I traveled a little slower with the sprayer resulting in more 2,4d so additional residue may have inhibited germination
4.) Combination of 1, 2, and 3 (probably most likely)
Anyway, just wanted to update a little because I'm generally pretty pleased with how things are turning out so far. May walk through and top dress this section with some more clover/buckwheat/brassica in a few weeks if it appears to be a little thin. If anyone has any ideas I'm glad to hear them.

After reading up on 2-4D, it might be this. How long after spraying did you plant? The half-life of 2-4D is about 7 days. The articles I read said it can depend on the soil type as to how long the residual soil effects last.
2 weeks, sprayed about 2/3 pint per acre so I "should" be okay from what I read but it wouldn't surprise me if it laid down a little thicker in this spot because I took my time going through because the thatch was much thicker. If it doesn't seem to be improving in a week or so I'll probably overseed with some extra clover and brassicas end of Aug
Couple comparisons of the side that is doing well, and the side that is struggling. Both pictures taken this morning. I'm sure the 2,4d residual was the culprit. I plan to overseed the lighter side this week after work and hope a good rain pushes some clover seed down into the thatch & helps it along some.
