I read something about 6 months ago on another forum. Huge debate over this. I think I recall that the original rack may have been destroyed in a fire.

If that is the case and all of his other racks were lost as well I'd say it more than likely WAS a forgery.

FWIW, I read there wasn't a fire. A guy claiming to be Mitch's son said the rack was still on the wall, as of last year anyway. Also read that he now lives in TX. The story I remember from a long time ago was that the warden who saw the rack inspected the skull plate and had no issues, but then sometime later his story changed to the skull plate being enclosed in bondo, which can be seen in a particular photo.

I have no clue what is true and what isn't. I still think it was hoax on some level. Another noteworthy fact is that the distance between antler burs was about an inch and a half wider than any buck ever entered in the record books. Seems far-fetched.
