New Cadidate, Old School

buckvelvet

5 year old buck +
This tree was just discovered while possibly being somewhere I shouldn't on neighbors land looking for a deer. I know, I'm bad, don't tell! Anyways my home 10 acres has NO soft mast production and it looks like the power company uncovered an old relic, that I do not believe is producing much on its last leg. Do ya'll think this is an apple tree? I did the best I could in the rain while taking the kids to school this morning.....

If it is i'm so stealing scion wood just to see what this old uncared for gal could be....

almost looks like a white oak from a distance.

Leaves deff aren't in the oak family. I will do my best to better a firm suspicions tonight, if I don't post, that means i'm in jail and help....... LOL..

The reason this is an odd place for this tree is it was all planted into jack pine almost like the stateland is around here. Odd place for some random apple tree to popup so long ago..

Fruit tree of some kind. Bole and branch structure all wrong for an oak. Remember - animals can deposit seed anywhere.

Was it a deer ina thicket with a apple from a mile away or did a squirrel steal from a bait pile back in 1875? :)

However it got there, it's a plus for the area. If you can get scion from it & graft it - it just continues what must be a fairly tough tree's lineage for the future. That's a good deal.

Yeah i'm gonna try it out, just because its the only thing that adjoins property or even close to it that is of the apple variety...

No idea what kind of fruit size or productions to expect.

I would guess apple or pear. Its straight up enough to be a pear but the deer loveeeeee them even more than apples

BV - If you have bears there, do you see any claw marks on the trunk ?? Apples or pears - they'll find the tree.

In theory we do have them, i've never seen a track or a critter though.

Well gents, I did it, i snuck onto that property and swiped a scion from it in the we hours of this morning. LOL!

Its the only apple tree on a property right in vacinity, i don't know if it will have fruit or if its just a flowering variety but someone or something planted this thing a LONG time ago. Its been stuck in big woods until the power company cut it all down around it 2 years ago. I don't have any rootstock left but I have some seedling crabs that i planted 2 years ago that aren't doing anything and are being choked out by competition, i'm digging them up tonight and grafting these scion to it to see if I can get one to take.
