My first grafting attempt.

omicron1792

5 year old buck +
Grafted 20 apple root stock with 8 or 9 different apple and crabapple varieties. They have been in the garage for two weeks letting the grafts callus. Going to plant them out at the farm tomorrow.

Not bad for first attempt. 16 of the 20 have new growth from the scion. 2 that don’t are chip bud grafts. And 2 others were both Yates. The grafted buds on those 4 are swollen and look like they will bud soon.

Looking good.

Checked on the apples I grafted and planted today. All are alive and growing except the 2 I did bud/chip grafts. Had lots of buds growing on rootstock I took off, and grafted buds are swollen but not broken out.

Looking good! The next step is to select one leader growing from your scion, and remove any others. And remove any buds that sprout from your rootstock. You want all the energy directed to one main shoot.

Wow, they took off. Mine are really slow growing.

I removed all root stock buds. When should I pair down to one limb?

Looks good.
