Mowed, Sprayed and drilled, now Clover?

Ok we mowed our two new plots two weeks ago, sprayed on Wednesday of this week and they are getting drilled with Purple Top Turnips, Radish, Rape Seed Dwarf Essex and Winfred Brassica this weekend.

IMG_1547.JPGNow should I throw some clover over them eventually to help with N or is that a waste? I have no idea, we just got these two plots approved in the middle of our CRP they are 2 and 3 acres. I will top dress next week with fertilizer as needed. I am in the middle of iowa the ground has been in CRP for the last 25 years or so.

Next spring I was thinking clover and buckwheat to cover until a fall plot

PS this is the oats (sorry) on my property the new CRP contract required 40 acres to be planted. Will the deer eat it this fall once it is this big? Will pheasants use it?

Thanks

My experience has been that clover starts slower than brassicas, and the clover will get over topped if the plot is planted heavy on brassicas. If the brassica mix is already in the ground, I wouldn’t bother with clover.

And all I see is oats. Everything likes to eat the heads of small grains.
