Vance has an impressive resume. Yale grad, author, movie about his life, military experience, Senator, VP, extremely successful in debates.

I like Rubio much more than Vance, but I'm not sure he has the charisma to win an election. Rubio is one of the best politicians in the GOP right now. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't vote based on substance, they vote based on appearance. Ever since the televised Nixon-Kennedy debate, how a candidate appears on TV is an important factor in getting elected. Internet seems to have made that even worse.

I was happy with my limited tubing of oak seedlings until yesterday’s trip to the land. Only 4 of 10 tubes in one area are still standing. I think bears knocked some over but maybe wind, snow, and deer did some too? Cages seem the way.. but they are expensive!

Cages are expensive until you factor in that trip to the land and every tree you've planted has been destroyed. Not so bad if they keep that from happening.

How do tubes not stunt branch growth? I’m not a tree guy

I have planted somewhere over 1000 tubes. Their failure rate is definitely higher than with cages. I am still using tubes for some tree species because the ease of installing them in the field is still worth it. If my property was largely established and I was only planting 10-20 trees per year, they would almost certainly be in cages.


Deer pulled five tubes off the shrubs they were protecting here. In this case, most of these were planted earlier this spring and were not large enough yet.

What I do currently is do tubes for the first 1-3 years and then switch them over to small cages or just leave them in the tubes if the trees are large enough - again, depending on the species.
