Milo seed market?

Is there a market here for certified milo seed sold in 5lb increments?

If so what's the breaking point for price? What would you pay or wouldn't pay?

Would it have to be one or the other; red or white? Or do you care?

Maturity days... would you care?

following. I thought I just read that red Milo was preferred by deer. Not sure how many lbs / acre it is planted. I've considered milo as a means to get some structure in food plots. Not sure how it competes against clover?.....tho I assume it could not be drilled into an existing clover plot?

I think there's a market for whomever will take on that market segment. I'm the target customer. I don't want blends. I just need a few pounds of each, and I'll mix my own. I'll likely buy 5-10 bags of small expensive seeds if you offer them:

1. In either 2 pound (chicory, clover, alfalfa, etc) or 5 pound (hard to source sorghums and broadleaves) quantities.
2. Have a fair price. I Don't need a youtube video every day, podcast, merch etc. Just iron out the logistics and make money by being a smart supplier.
3. Have the product. Green cover seed doesn't ever seem to have the same seed each year.

Would love to see someone break 50 pound bags and repack them into 2 and 5 pound bags and re-sell it. Would be a great school fundraiser I'd think.

What kind of a premium do you pay for the 2 lb and 5 lb quantities?

Edit: FWIW. Mimbach's fleet in St Cloud repacks many popular seeds into small quantities.....as do several other suppliers. They do offer quite a few varieties. Deer Creek does too and offers free shipping on 20 lbs or more in 2, 5, or 10 lbs sacks.

I really couldn't tell you lately. I just had a hell of a time sourcing some seed last year because of how pricing had shifted so much. I don't mind paying more for small quantities, but you'd be buying a quarter of the 50 lb bag for 1 lb of seed at some of those prices it seemed.

If you buy from a seed dealer for ag it will likely cost you less for a bag than if you buy from buck on the bag type store for a small bag.I will say that Real World was starting to sell a grain sorghum this year and their seed is easy for me to get but I think SIL will plant a couple thousand acres this year so getting seed wouldn't be an issue.I just don't really care for usually for small plots unless I broadcast wheat into milo plot

Doesn't look like there's much of an interest in this.
I know a guy... I think he could make it happen but I don't want to get him into it for 3 sales a year.

I did the math and I need 8 pounds this year. I think milo is untreated so any extra could be used for birdseed I guess. What is WGF sorghum and how is it different from milo? Anyone got a handle on that?

Maturity date where I am in zone 4 would matter a lot actually. Got some milo/sorghum whatever from local conservation group. Seemed like took way too long to mature and yield was rather poor. Don't know enough about the stuff to say how short they have maturity dates tho

I think the earliest or quickest is milo 57 day maturity. Not sure if that fits between your last and first frosts though.

I don't want to speak for them, but Welter's has sold me seed in smaller amounts than 50 lb. bags. When I asked them the price per-lb., they said take the 50 lb. bag price and divide by 50 to get the per-lb. price. Maybe call them and ask them about which seeds you want in smaller amounts. FWIW.

Northwood Whitetail Whitetail Food Plot Seed Company is offering red Milo. His prices are on the high side, but I'm sure his product is high quality.

Just this morning I got off the phone with the local seed company. I'm ordering my soybeans for next year and wanted 10 pounds of milo and 50 pounds of buckwheat also. They are going to give me the milo free from a torn bag and 25 pounds of buckwheat the same. Gotta buy 25 more pounds of buckwheat for $42 and whatever the beans cost. Doesn't hurt to ask I guess. They have been good top me over the last several years.

8 lbs won't do alot, are you just doing a short strip? We are planting 150 acres of early milo on my place then going back in with oats, radishes, wheat, rye cover crop,

5-6 lbs will plant an acre.

Welters recommends

Planting Rates

Stand Alone
15 lbs per acre or 15-20 lbs per acre if broadcast

I'm thinking we usually do closer to 10-12 lbs so at increase for broadcast would be around 20lbs per acre but alot depends on quality of soil and rain fall amounts. I do know too close it will not head out so they may be going on the safe side. Welters is a good place to get seed so I would believe what they tell you.

Strips, yeah. 1-1/4 acres total. Looking for a population somewhere near 100,000. Seed I got coming is 15,000/lb.

There are huge differences in rates between WGF and red Milo. The Milo I planted would be crowded at 15lbs per acre and seed production would suffer. I'm trying to get the most height out of my milo as well, and too high a population would stunt it.
Everyone's situation and goals are different.

Nailed it. I'm planting 100,000 hoping for 70-80 plants. I want grain production and height would be a bonus. This is also going in some very good ground. Looking at ag talk is appears a lot of guys will plant in the 50-60 range on poorer ground. It is all so situational. I was also shocked at the huge variability of seed size in milo. Before we settled on the free stuff, he said he had anywhere from about 10,000/lb up to 22,000. Crazy difference if you planted by the pound.
