Liberal teachers pushing their views

School has been canceled in Wisconsin and my sons school switched to online learning for the rest of this school year. He is a freshman. While working on his classes today he asked for my help on picking a topic for an assigned project in his English class. He showed me the directions his teacher sent and I immediately had concerns. It is a research assignment on “Social Injustice”. The teacher made up a list of “social injustices” they were to choose from and said they were NOT to debate if this was a social injustice. They were to argue in their paper how and why their topic IS a social injustice. Her list of “social injustices “ included: The school to prison pipeline, Juvenile convictions following into adult life, racial profiling by police, solitary confinement in prison, racial inequality in prison, separating immigrants from children, voter ID laws, efforts to suppress voting by mail, targeted drone strikes, and many more liberal political topics. This is BS!! She shouldn’t be pushing her liberal political beliefs in the classroom. Way down the list was the decline of bee populations so my son picked that one.

I was on a school board for 10 years. We had our share of agenda teachers. Most were not. In the classroom anyway. We had a very capable Administration That handled issues like this from time to time. What you’re seeing is a teacher who thinking nobody’s watching. Depends on your administrators I guess but a phone call up through the chain of command would be in order here. Start with the teacher and then move up.

It's not just in Wisconsin my friend. And it starts much earlier than in HS and it's not just in schools. I have a friend who has a younger daughter who catches on to a lot of things... He texts me the things that go on (my boys are older and not as susceptible). His daughter has asked "why are those boys kissing?" (TGI Fridays commercial), women proposing to another woman (Bank of America ad), using math problems at school related to socialism where the only "right answer" it to allow "Billy" to receive money from someone else so he can eat. The list goes on and on.

The way he and I have come to terms with it is how we raise our kids matters most. When they are old enough to understand things will make more sense. Then again so much of it will be accepted as "normal" by so many...

Sounds like the teacher is a regular communist with evil and sinister motives. You should probably home school your kid and teach him to live off the grid. Let me know how that works out for ya.

My sons have come home many times and said that their teacher was ripping on Trump. College is worse yet... I thought about calling the Supt (who is very conservative) but just never did.

I would certainly make your thoughts known on this. I have 4 aunts whom are teachers and prior to gov Walker they were normal. Once attempts where made to abolish the worst gangs in schools (the teachers union), these teachers seemed to turn into radical leftists. Brainwashed by the gang(union) leaders they're now sure to push liberal ideas. I have one other aunt who teaches in a private school, she's normal.

Maybe this virus is helping to show the flaws in public education? Private schools are much more cost effective and teachers rewarded by merit rather than union agreements would certainly increase teacher quality. Not to mention people wouldn't be having children they can't afford if responsible for their own children's education costs

Just to clarify things as I should have probably titled the thread better. I’m not lumping all teachers into this category. There are lots of really great teachers out there. Both of my parents are retired from teaching. Even tho they are Democrats who would never vote for a Republican I think they both kept politics out of their classrooms. This teacher is young not too far removed from a very liberal college near by. I know she will retaliate towards my son so I will wait to make some phone calls till after the class is done.

Here in NY that is somewhat a new norm that is acceptable for far too many imho it saddens me to be honest.
I took my daughter to a Trump rally in the summer of 2015 because it was only 20 minutes from us and I liked his platform. Thought it would be a good experience for my 14 year old to have and it was, she actually enjoyed it which I agree is a bit odd for that age. Anyway, when school started back up in September one of her classes had the usual "what did you do over the summer" sessions and she brought up the Trump rally amongst other things. She said the teacher stopped her after mentioning Trump and asked her questions like "do you think Trump is a racist"? And "how do you feel about him being a womanizer"?
She was crying when she told me this, obviously I am biased here but my daughter is a good kid that doesn't cause troubles and does things like opens doors for old people, she got in a fight at school sticking up for a boy that was repeatedly bullied a few others. In short she is a good kid, I am not going to lie, if it makes my daughter cry... I am pissed. I spoke with the Principal about what happened and he acknowledged that others have had similar problems with the same teacher and in fact, another kid told the Principal about my daughter crying after what was said to her about the Trump rally. The Principal said not much can be done except move her to a different classroom so we did. Just sucks that things like that are acceptable within our public school system. My daughter said that not many of her teachers like Trump which speaks volumes about Teachers freely giving their political opinion to their students. When I was in school I had no idea what party affiliation my teachers were, and strongly feel that is how it should still be today. Public schools are directly paid for by us and shouldn't be influencing our kids in any way with their personal political views. It only leads us closer to indoctrination.
I am not grouping all teachers together there, we have great teachers and I am thankful for them everyday. Many of them have to work twice as hard to keep our kids grades up during this pandemic. I do tell the Principal when I see this and let him know that they are doing outstanding work so I am not just a complainer lol My daughter is my life and if she is crying I am also upset.
Don't have anything nice to say... don't say nothin!

Trouble Trees---I think that is just sad. It is just unbelievable that they would make her feel bad about supporting Trump. But it is common here in MN too. One thing that made me laugh is a local school in my area had the kids vote for their candidates (Trump and Hillary). Trump won 2-1 and some of the local teachers actually didn't want to print the results in the local paper. I had to chuckle when I heard that.

I would have your son propose to do a "social injustice" paper on "Political Indoctrination of Children by Teachers".

What school? We must be close.

That is a SOLID solution my friend! I like it :)

I love this idea but she must have thought of this as she put in the directions that you can only pick from her listed topics. I’d have him ask her but she already doesn’t like him.

I don't disagree that it sounds like a teacher pushing an agenda, and that clearly happens from time to time, but it could also be that the teacher was trying to get kids to be able to appreciate a viewpoint that they don't share. This is an attribute that's all too uncommon these days. Of course, were that true, then an equally valid set of topics would include building arguments for less well-tolerated social practices. Which would freak the crap out of lots of parents. But me, I'd be okay with it. There's nothing wrong with playing devil's advocate.

Now teachers are the enemy???? Its called critical thinking. Its an important skill in life, try it sometime. Teachers, Colleges, Press and Scientists are liberal and have evil agendas to take your tax dollars and poison your children's minds. Really??? There's a conspricacy theory around every corner these days. Is every middle aged white guy paranoid, scared, and angry that someone is trying to take something from them? I hope not, but it sure feels that way.

I am Onondaga. You may have one of those Ithaca teachers to deal with.

WOW you are like 15 minutes from me sir! lol

Ithaca would have been my guess too given those parameters but this was slightly more local, I am a little leary to put my exact location out here on the interweb in open forum though bud.
