If you could change one regulation in your state

The big concern, here - would hunters kill enough deer with our abundance of cover. We have a lot 3000/4000 acre leases - all in early successional growth with almost no hardwood. Our regs allow baiting during season in cwd zones. Thinking by our g&f, if they outlawed baiting - hunters wouldnt kill enough deer. I agree 100% with that theory. I would be afraid the deer population would balloon with no baiting. We already have an 8 week firearm season - I doubt increasing season length or bag limit would help. I have seen higher deer density, and as great as they may sound, my family hit so many deer with our vehicles, we got a cancellation notice from our insurance company.

Are you allowed to mow your corn. They definitely like it better on the ground.
Yes, but the farmer does everything with the corn in exchange for tractor work since I don't have a tractor up there. He mows lanes and firebreaks in my old fields. He picks the other half of the corn after the season. I live 10.5 hrs away, so it works out good. If I had a tractor up there, I would do things a little different. I just work in the timber during the off season mainly.

Next year see if he will combine the corn before season and just off load 1/2 of the field on to the ground as he’s combining. A field full of corn spread out has to be better then a pile.

He keeps all the corn. He picked half during the first part of the season, and the other half after. He's picking whole cobs he sells. I get tractor work in exchange.

Ah, Got it. I thought he left you 1/2.

I left quarter of an ac in standing corn when we harvested over a month ago. Pretty clear we don't have many deer these days after finding so many ears today. Didn't know whether to be happy or sad. I do expect it to go fast now with the forecast.

I made the same mistake once when I had high deer density. Left it standing only to be untouched. I had so much volunteer corn the next spring I couldn’t plant beans.

Not everywhere but my deer are too stupid to eat it off the stalk. Mow that stand and they will come.

Unless the snow is going to cover it up.

I think guys plunk down their cash, buy their rifle with a shiny new chinese scope already attached to it, get her boresighted at Cabela's, watch a few videos of guys killing big game at extended distances, and can't resist touching off a round or two at a deer 300 yards away just as legal shooting light expires. I am certain this is going on around me.
I text with the guy that has permission to hunt the farm next to me.

At about 2pm the day before firearm season: “I still have to shoot my new rifle”

At about 9am opening day: “I shot at a big one. If I hit him he may have gone onto yours”.

Wonder if he sees any correlation between the two. This kid is the only hunter on a great property, he tries hard but if he ever kills the trophy he is after it will be an accident or a goddamn miracle.

Reference the above texts, OF COURSE later I got the obligatory “no blood” text but the last time I got that text from a guy it took me about 20 minutes to find a fresh blood trail 200 yards into my place.

Allow year-round hunting and trapping of raccoons.

Or...

Mandatory annual shooting test for all archery hunters.

Rifle hunters need to be tested also.
First, ask them if they have watched any "long range hunting" videos or forums? If they say yes, they are limited to a slug gun.

If they think about holdover at 300 yards they have to hunt with a spear.

I wouldn't object to a shooting test for rifle hunters. We do it every year in Norway.

I was talking with a guy the other day who was bragging that he hit a steel target "...at about a thousand yards..." with his 22-250. I asked him what distance his gun was zeroed at and he said 100 yards. I've longed my entire life to be that good........

There’s some distance where it’s no longer hunting, it’s just target practice. I hear some of those western guys say I shot an elk at 600 yards as if he just accomplished something. I think, you know there’s magnitudes of guys who get within 50 yards of elk every day…you suck at hunting.

Whole I know there is a whole lot of soil that goes along with long range shooting, I agree it's not really hunting at that point.

Give the government a chance to infringe on my 2nd amendment rights more? No thank you.

And If I compare the average long range shooters skills to the average hunter it’s no question. Many of the latter don’t even check their zero before they hunt each year, while the long range guy has been shooting at the range all year long.

I may have posted this before . Minnesota

Move the gun season back to November 18 at earliest …. (1) buck maximum, no exceptions. Minnesota is a legit big buck state again !

It would also improve the buck to for ratio!

Yeah it takes a lot of skil and practice to shoot long range but at 500 or more yards is it really hunting anymore? Shot load of skill in shooting yes but what hunting skills?
