If you could change one regulation in your state

My corner of the state has well over a 100,000 acres of state land, is a half hr drive from many towns in Wis. and an hr or less drive from Iowa. Our firearm season also does not fall at the same time as either of the two mentioned states. I have no problem with out of state hunting but I would at the bare minimum increase the license for non residents to $500 + In my opinion, MN could be the best state in the country for whitetails if there were some simple season and regulation changes. We have a great mix of ag and woodland in the Driftless.

One example of how quickly a simple regulation change can disrupt things. When I was in Highschool there was a place in the lower Whitewater River Valley that I liked to trout fish and also a nice big pool we would take girls swimming to. We would generally stay until dark or after. The drive home would take us through a large wildlife refuge. You couldn't drive more than 15 miles per hour for about 10 miles after dark because there were so many deer crossing the road. They opened up the refuge by lottery for youth season. It only took about two years of that to completely change how the deer used the area. Every year shed hunters would find monster sheds in there and also booner dead heads. It hasn't been that way for about 20 years.

I understand that point of view. I just see it differently. Each state draws a line somewhere. My line would be residency.

Agree. Each state game agency is tasked with managing the wildlife for the benefit of it’s residents. Creating incentive for non-residents to buy land is the opposite of that as it makes access more difficult or expensive for residents.

I'm all for pushing back against the constant slide towards making killing deer easier and easier but I think that we need to fight to keep hunting accessible to the common man without major sacrifice in their state of residence.

I think license reciprocity would be a fair way to deal with MN nonresident deer license prices. Iowa charges a premium for their great deer hunting, so we should also charge a premium for our deer hunting. And our fishing - I think everyone from Iowa fishes Minnesota so ideally they should pay a fishing premium to fish Minnesota.

You can kill 75 does a year here and 3 bucks, and there are more deer than there have ever been.

I wouldn’t change our long season and liberal limits for anything.

Only thing I’d change is to allow more than one doe a day to be taken

Had no idea you guys can take that many deer. WOW! I would be living on it myself.

Without really thinking too hard about it, I'd vote to allow centerfire rifles on private land rather than just the straightwall variety.

Not that it's that big a thing, and baiting would probably be a bigger impact, but I have so many fun guns that I'm not able to kill deer with.

Baiting is probably the right answer, but I wanna kill one with my 25-06 or 243.

I don't think I like deer enough to spend that much time cleaning them and eating it every day. That would just turn into a hassle.
No kidding. The minor hassle of butchering/processing has kept me from shooting any deer at all some years.

I dont have any issue with this but can't see a state agency wanting to mess with it. I'd imagine there is some process to approving license fee changes - who in the world is going to look at 50 other states and try to figure out how they address NRs in the various hunting and fishing seasons and thus try to justify an applicable price? Then revisit annually because other states change regs/license structure.. Would just be creating a headache for themselves.

Ha! I've passed good bucks on a Sunday night because I didn't want to stay up all night taking care of it, then have work in the morning!

Truth.

Don’t hate me but I sometimes take backstraps and tenderloins and use the rest to bait predators. Ha

My wildlife biologist always gets on to me for not taking enough does. It’s a hassle but man we just are overrun with deer down here.

My freezers (all 3 of them) are full especially since I got my first elk this year. That said we haven’t bought beef for ground beef in a long time. I still buy a good ribeye steak to cook every once in a while.

My last deer back strap.

I can't hate on that. People shoot yotes here and leave then lay instead of skinning them and selling the pelt. There's a lot of them and the population isn't going down. Seems like a waste but in certain circumstances maybe not. We dove hunt a lot. I save every heart and gizzard from them (ducks too). Makes a great fry at the end of the season. I'd consider it a waste to throw them out, but I love them like you probably love backstrap and tenderloin.

We grow our own ribeye and porkchops. Freezers stay full one way or the other!

I give my dove to some boys I hunt with. But man I love quail.

Would legally be considered Wanton waste in most every state ive hunted big game.

I dont blame you but it's certainly a shame when population control ends up devaluing the animals.

I've done the same with a summer, thin skinned crop damage deer. Both fall deer are 4 quarters and backstraps at very least.

We killed 25 deer off of our 330 acre mini-co op this year. right now we can't keep the feeders full because we still have so many hammering it.

It would take 10 min. Wouldn't care what other states charge. Buy it don't buy it don't care. If it cost the state to much $$ drain the swamp.

Looks delicious. Never thought of seasoning with PEZ.
