Hybrid Poplars, Willows and miscanthus x giganteus plantings

I've posted occasionally regarding the above mentioned grass and trees but I figured I'd I just share some of the results based off of what I had learned from the old Forum and from here!

Last spring I planted 25 Hybrid Poplars and 25 Hybrid Willows and I had about an 80% success rate. The ones that died were in very poor soil and a heavily shaded area. In my test area I only had one of each survive and those are not even as big as the 24" cuttings I planted this spring.

The taller trees in the tubes below were all 12" cuttings when I planted them last year! even with the weed competition they are doing extremely well. I hit the area with roundup and put down black fabric but it only lasted one season before the weeds busted through.

the larger tubed trees were 24" cuttings last year. I planted another 50 poplars this spring and The tubes in the distance are 24" cuttings I planted this May. I put a 12" mulch base around them and have had to just trim around them a few times.

This is some of the miscanthus I planted early June. I'm hoping it fills in nice and solid. I used a tiller to initially clear the strip and then I planted about 80 rhizomes here. I'll have to spray the area with 24db soon but it seems to be doing very well for only a month in and with some weed competition.

lastly this was one of the "arbor day special" crab apples. I planted two of them and both are actually doing well considering they were only 2 inches tall and as thick and 16 gauge wire. There are some persimmons in this field also but they got hit by the Japanese beetles pretty hard before I noticed them and hit it with Seven. OUt of the 10 Arbor day foundation trees, only a third of them survived ( crabs, redbud and hawthorn)

thanks for reading
Ps that last pic is also of the telephone pole bridge I built and documented on the old forum. 2 years and going strong and despite some flash floods, the bank has proven to be wide and deep enough!!

I remember the bridge project. Looks great!

Well done.
