How to plant sunflowers?

Planted a couple of acres in North Florida this year and they came right up and my herd let them grow untouched until they were about 8" tall... next time I checked them, absolutely mowed to the ground. Gave the deer a nice spring-time ice cream snack, but not a single plant made it / didn't get to see a single flower.

I planted them this spring in an oats/sunflower mix, they came in great, but the deer kept them chopped off at about 4 inches, I then disced them under and planted ppt, and GHR. Now they wont leave the ppt, and ghr alone.

I've planted them before but they never get over 3" and they are gone & I've got low deer numbers. Deer candy for sure.
