how much sun

DiSc0Rd

5 year old buck +
As I have stated before I'm going to put in WR and a brassica mix at the end of the month. the field i have gets full sun from say 10am to 3pm but one side is shaded after that. the other side will have sun until almost 730 last night. I have enough WR to cover the whole 2 acres but I only bought enough brassica for a half acre. So, would I be better served putting the brasc on the side that get the most sun or do they prefer some shade. I have never planted them before and would prefer the best outcome for what conditions I can at least control

IMO, you can trend that way, and the sunny stuff may do a little better, but I wouldn't overthink it. I'd put em in, ahead of a timely rain, and let it roll.

My field is similar with tall trees at the west end. Things grow there for sure. Broadcast and rain dance buddy. (I won't mention fert/lime ;)

Curious, how many pounds of brassica seed are you planting on 1/2 acre?

soil test goes out tomorrow :)

A lot of people plant to heavy IMO. Not sure if your doing a lickcreek strip type of rotation or not but you could easily spread that over an acre worth of ground if you wanted and still have plenty of room for your cereals to fill in. I think that magic number for most brassica is one (germinated)seed per square foot but everyones situation is different. FWIW there are approx. 220K purple top turnip seeds per pound. Every variety will be different in that aspect especially radishes but you get the picture.

FWIW I planted some turnips and radishes about 2 weeks ago. We have been really dry here and the stuff in the shade is growing a lot faster than the stuff in full sun.

you give me to much credit sir. i dont have a rotation in mind. i honestly havent even read about the correct rotations yet. i know they are on here i just havent dug into them. this year was fly by night at its finest. buckwheat in, in july rye and brassc in sept and that is as far as my brain has gotten. i want to do this right so i should get to reading but sometimes at work they make me work, it's very rude

Ha. You can't/wont learn everything all at once and online advice (even good advice) only goes so far. Trial and error and good note taking will be your best teacher. The best anyone on here can do is hope to reduce the learning curve for you. I still go against the grain from time to time just to find out the "what if I did it this way" technique. Eggs, baskets, and all that stuff.

Both WR and brassicas will do fine with 5 hours of sun. Both are shade tolerant in my experience. As Roym mentioned, the sunny areas will do a tad better but I wouldn't overthink it. Let fly.

There are more than one consideration with trees. Shade is one. The other is water consumption. The sides of my small fields never do as well, regardless of sun. It is the fact that tree roots suck a lot of water. Don't worry about the sun, just plant and learn.

You will do better mixing your brassica with the WR. Typical brassica rates in a mix are 2 lbs per acre or less. So, 3 lbs spread over 2 acres will be fine along with the WR. Consider adding 10 lbs of Crimson Clover (annual) to that mix. The combination of legume/cereal/brassica works well for deer and soil.

Thanks,

Jack

I think that's the plan. Buckwheat was looking pretty sad today. No rain for over a week but 70% chances tonight and all week so I hope they will rebound. Yen pounds total or ten pounds per acre?
