It’s acorn season. As I was swearing this morning after getting hit in the head twice with acorns, I got to wondering, how many pounds per tree can an oak produce?
Now, not every tree is a winner, and not every tree is as big as an oak can be. These guys say a big tree with a big crop can produce 1,000 lbs. My trees aren’t that big.

Let’s say mine produce 100 lbs per tree. I’ve got let’s say 300 mature bur oak and 1/3 of them produce those yields in a bumper year like this. That would mean I have 10,000 pounds of acorns laying on my property right now.
10,000 divided by 30 pounds per bushel, I have nearly 300 bushels of acorns on the ground. Last time this happened, acorns never got used despite no snow for 90+ days after they fell. Consider every animal in the woods uses them, and they can in total eat maybe 5-10 bushels per day, I bet I have way more than 300 bushels on the ground.
