How many bushels/pounds acorns per oak?

It’s acorn season. As I was swearing this morning after getting hit in the head twice with acorns, I got to wondering, how many pounds per tree can an oak produce?

Now, not every tree is a winner, and not every tree is as big as an oak can be. These guys say a big tree with a big crop can produce 1,000 lbs. My trees aren’t that big.

Let’s say mine produce 100 lbs per tree. I’ve got let’s say 300 mature bur oak and 1/3 of them produce those yields in a bumper year like this. That would mean I have 10,000 pounds of acorns laying on my property right now.

10,000 divided by 30 pounds per bushel, I have nearly 300 bushels of acorns on the ground. Last time this happened, acorns never got used despite no snow for 90+ days after they fell. Consider every animal in the woods uses them, and they can in total eat maybe 5-10 bushels per day, I bet I have way more than 300 bushels on the ground.

Very common here, in years of even just moderate acorn production, many of them go un-used and just lay on the ground and rot.

Interesting. I have wondered that myself at times in terms of actual production.

There’s a big Bur Oak tree in my yard that is raining acorns . It might be the most I’ve ever seen ?

Could be the abundant rain ? Who knows. ?

Burs aren't common here. I know of only a handful in parks and have never seen one that hadn't been planted.

Hmmmm.... you'd think I'd notice 1000 pounds of acorns in my driveway.

About 8 years ago went squirrel hunting at a new to me state parcel. Big nice oaks everywhere, includign a good amount of white ones. But, wheres the squirrels.......

Found a fluke hickory tree. Litter buggers were having a party on that thing. There was so many on that tree, I shot one and when it fell it knocked one off the tree. Sat in one spot aout 40 yards away. 3 shot, 3 squirrels, then I picked them up and went home. Only moved after I got the 3. Was a special hunt too, first time out with my CZ ultra lux and iron sights. PRobably today I need a few more shots.

I’m pretty sure they have an extra zero on that estimate of acorn pounds produced per tree I’d say 100 pounds is a lot closer to reality than 1000 pounds is. Pecan growers estimate 1000 pounds per acre.
