BobinCt

5 year old buck +
Located in Connecticut. Some leaves have turned completely brown while other have other things going on. I have sprayed 5x this year with Neem Oil back in late march mixed with copper. Then following week I did Captan, Avaunt, Manzate every 10 days.IMG_0337.jpegIMG_0336.jpegIMG_0335.jpegIMG_0334.jpeg

Chemical burn/photo-toxic. Spraying with too much direct sunlight will burn leaves.

Captan and oil is a no no. 2 weeks between applying them is recommended. Neem is worthless anyway, especially if you're going to use non organic insecticide and fungicide.

I waited two weeks before applying. I know you can’t mix captan with oil . I mixed the Kocide 3000 with the neem oil. I know I originally said a week but it was def two weeks or more.

Homer: should I climate the Neem oil? It’s always my first spray of the year .

I think Neem is hyped as a cure all with very little evidence of doing anything. Just buy plain old all season oil for your dormant season spray, and/or for mixing with Kocide

Edit...still be sure to allow 2 weeks between all season (or dormant) oil and Captan

neem oil is a little better than general dormant oil.

It's main use is to smother immature insects and insect eggs, basically choking thei air supply off. The neem does have some properties that can help with bacteria and fungus to an extent. I only spray before buds start waking up. Some swell is ok. Done properly you see a light coating of oil on the tree.

I have never sprayed that on a tree with leaves.

This year I did spray with copper twice before leaf out. mainly for my peaches for peach leaf curl. I also sprayed trees with cedar apple rust issues and a bartlet pear tree that gets fireblight. I used bonide copper spray. The nurse branches on droptine and pristine dont have a spot of rust on them. I am converting those trees to kerr and trailman. Golden delicious is staying that way and looks good too. One peach tree is curl free so far, the other has it in some spots, but looksa ton better than last year with no treatment.

I mainly use malathion for insects. Works great, not too nasty of a chemical either. No residual effects. Usually spary early to mid may, then late may to early june, and maybe one late june for japanese beetles.

Only sprayed once this year so far 2 weeks ago. Looking pretty good so far. Think I hit a sweet spot in critter development.

You able to reach the top of the trees. Sometimes the mid level brnaches get soaked too much trying to get the top of the tree.

I use a leaf blower with a tank. However, I have a 4ft extension wank for my pump sprayer. Can reach 10ft tall younger trees easily with it.

Malathion can be bought at bix outdoor stores like lowes and home depot. Spectracide one seems to work OK for me. Will likely buy a more larger bottle next time.

On what do you base your statement that neem is better than dormant/all season oil? Internet searches? Got some personal experience to back that statement up? Neem is a waste of money and time

This is what happened to your trees. I have seen it happen with temperatures in the 60’s. Best time to spray is late evening.

I have a large tree of unknown variety at my home. I sprayed neem oil on it, and the scab went away for a year. I also pruned it for airflow and rake underneath it the same dormant season. Probably all 3 helped. It would suffer from a mild case of scab otherwise. So hard to tell.

I do know trees hold insect eggs. I keep a handful of smaller bareroots that do not have much roots in root maker pots. I start tem inside by the window. Low and behold they get aphids on it. one year I got brown apple aphids, not the usual green ones.

I spray my bareroots with dormant oil right after planting.

I agree Neem is over hyped. However, it was used long before organic was a thing, and most modern chemicals were invented. Internet can lead you down a wrong path for sure. I spent some time looking up the hiistory of fertilizers last year, it is pretty neat to see how far we gotten and what was used before we got there. Can't find a good source for a history of orchard chemicals though, just certain pesticides.

^ ^ ^ ^ Regular dormant oil is for smothering the eggs of insects. Neem oil isn't the only thing that accomplishes egg-smothering. We don't use neem oil at camp, but we have used dormant oil on our apple, crab and pear trees. Like many things - timing of sprays & other treatments can be the ticket to success or failure. Spraying under the wrong conditions / timing can result in bad outcomes. Research and labels .....

Spray pesticides is kinda of a scary thing. Malathion is not that bad. Getting a longer wand can help too. I use a 3m half face mask, goggles, and wear clothing I put in the wash.

malathion is an organophosphate. Most folks who spray use this one.
