Habitat out loud

SD through welter $215 including shipping. 10 pounds of ysc 10 pounds balsana 10 pounds chickory 10 pounds Alfalfa 7 pounds alsick and 3 pounds plantain. Curious on your thoughts ty

Sounds like a solid blend. I might swap alsike with red clover. The only reason I say that is I don't know alsike. I know red clover will go to toast on it's own by late summer and work perfectly in a throw and roll. I don't know how alsike works.

I'm gonna earn my stripes this weekend. Hoping to get some time on the saw again, and do some splitting on my ash pile.

Handwarmers in your gloves and in every pocket, SD!! That's cold.

I overdressed today. I came in and took off a layer. If the wind ain’t blowing, it’s easy to stay warm.

What is the "overdressed" you speak of? Can't say I ever overdressed in OZ.....oh maybe that time I wore long pants instead of shorts? (FORE!!)

Insulated Duluth firehouse pants were too much. Up top I had a shirt, long sleeve shit, and a thin sweatshirt. That was perfect. These are neck gator temps though.

You lose a lot of heat in the neck.

SD your a habit guru for sure. I decided to change the mix to 10 chickory 10 medium red 10 Alfalfa 10 balsana 7 alsicke 3 plantain. Alsicke is a perrenial and is more hardy in acidic soils. Ysc does not do well in lower ph soils. I guess the main reason is having perrenials and building more perrenials into it keeps the soil building. This way I can crimp or roll next year plant the mix in August and then mow it down beginning in October.

That video is great. How are the small game numbers in your area this winter? That's some nice looking habitat for sure.

Did you lose weight?

Rabbits and squirrels are booming right now. Last year, I had a lot of brush piles in that area. Some got buried, some got burned, and some got saved.

I have lost weight. I've got 7 more pounds to go to win the office contest. We weigh in the monday before Christmas. That's why i'm taking out my calories on the forest. The pounds fly off when making firewood.

Is most of that firewood ash? You have a nice supply already and the winter is just getting started.

The deer and rabbits should have a nice supply of fresh browse with those tree tops now in reach.

Yes, everything in that video was black ash. I'm headed back out tomorrow, or I'm going to try anyway. I have more snow, and this'll be the coldest weekend yet. I'd like to see another dozen trees on the ground just in case we get one big storm and the winter habitat season abruptly ends.

How do saws run at -20?

SD, Looks like you had perfect day for woods work. How’s that firewood stacking technique working for you? Looks great
Oh! I'm glad you asked!

The big idea is to only stack those outer rows about two feet high so the blowout pressure is lower. I'm gonna aim to finish that pile tomorrow and the rest is getting piled loose in the center. I just wanted rows high enough keep the pile neat.

I was wondering why you were stacking it so low. I would have a hard time bending over that often to get a load of wood and may end up in the middle of the pile.

SD if you don't win the diet contest I'd be shocked. I wonder if you have blue racers snakes your way
