Gypsum - Weed Trial

Ok, the suburu is loaded again with gypsum and one bag of calcitic Pell lime. The Pell lime is for my pond. I’m trying to get my water pH to Dakotas alkalinity.

This weekend I’m doing the road plot or what many of you know as the YSC plot. Species of concern out there is hemp nettle. Not much else causing me worry at this point. This ground is original topsoil. Same topsoil I used in my raised beds.

I would get pretty aggressive blooms of hemp nettle in my beds. Earlier this summer I put a really hot rate of calcium on my garden beds, and I haven’t had hemp nettle since it got rained in really well.

I’m not ready to say this is the reason, but it’s got me watching. Could also be the 4” of wood chips holding it back as well.

I had my face in the weeds this past weekend. I’ve been monitoring my yard plot after the addition of 2000 lbs/ac gypsum. The one I’m watching is burdock. I have burdock 5’ away from this plot, and it looks like this:

This is the burdock in the plot. I don’t know that these are cause reactions to the gypsum, but it’s interesting.

The grass doesn't seem as deep green in the treated area either. Would that particular grass be affected by the gypsum as well?

Hard to say. My oats look terrible in there too. I’m not sure what to think. I’m still leaning towards too high of a rate on oats causing stunting and possibly an N deficit.
