Grass ID?

Brother took a liking to this stuff. He wants to see if we can figure out what it is and broadcast it into our road edge. Can anyone ID it, and is it viable in a broadcast/zero prep situation?

I once considered the same plant, but it is invasive and I decided against it.

I would consider the miscanthus that some are ordering instead. MG may not do well at your zone 1 location, but you could try it.

Not 100% sure, but that sure looks like phragmites to me....which BTW is NOT something you want to plant.

Pretty sure Stu is right on phragmites, it has taken over all the places cat tails used to be here. Very invasive.
