Grafting pear to apple rootstock

An interesting discussion over on the NAFEX facebook page about using Winter Banana as an interstem to graft a pear to an apple rootstock. Supposedly works. I'm going to get some Winter Banana scion this spring and give it a try seeing as I can't seem to get a good graft on pear rootstock:mad:.

I've never heard of this, but it sounds interesting.
I've had a lower success rate with pears too, but this year I did my usual dormant grafting of to pear rootstock, both failed.
After the rootstocks began growing I pinched them off, cut them back and grafted them again, both takes.
Whether it helped that they were actively growing or I just did a better job on grafting I can't say for sure, but one of them is over 7' in one growing season.

Actually you were 1 for 4 on dormant pear grafts

So you are choosing whatever rootstock you want, grafting Winter Banana to it and then grafting the pear to the Winter Banana....what is the advantage of not directly grafting the pear to the rootstock?

If I understood it right you can use winter banana as a interested to graft pears to Apple rootstock

From what I understand no other apple variety is compatible with pear scion.

They just don't take? Doing W/T or cleft grafts?

I use a cleft graft on my apples and pears. I think the rootstock was the problem not the graft. I bought 10 OHxF 97 pear rootstock last spring. I grafted 6 and planted 4 in pots to let grow for a year. All 6 grafted trees leafed out and then died with no shoots growing off the rootstock and 3 out of the 4 rootstock I planted in pots died. Had the same problem with most of the apple grafts that failed this year. The scion leafed out and then died and the rootstock on most never sent out any shoots.

From what i have seen, if you have apple/pear mix grafts the unions snap when it tries to fruit?
