Got to taste my first whitney crab apple

cavey

5 year old buck +
I have been waiting for some of my younger trees to start hanging fruit.... My first Whitney crab apple taste test (good flavor - a little soft, being a crab I thought it would be crunchy) then I had the surprise --- I did not remember grafting black berries onto the tree. I had to do a double take and then some to figure out what was going on. 5 foot up plus into the tree where I grabbed the crab apple from it looked like the tree had a branch with Blackberries. The trunk at the ground level is pretty weed free so no BB there and I could not see berry leaves anywhere just the crabs leaves. Bam! Million dollar hybrid miracle!!!! Im going to be rich!!! I was this close to speed dialing Start Brothers.... Sadly my dreams were shattered - up the back side, one spindly- leafless blackberry cane had snaked its way up 5 or 6 feet and a dozen or so blackberries where growing amongst the crabs . Nice ones too.

So thumbs up for the Whitney crab.
