Foodplot drilled into NWSG without killing NWSG

My brain is bouncing around tonight as I watch football, looking at our newly updated imagery through Hunt X of our farm. Has anyone ever burned off a patch of NWSG once it has gone dormant in the Fall and then drilled a quick germinating cool season food plot into it? Not looking to kill off the NWSG just making dual use of a patch of ground. Kind of like double cropping an area. I would think any bare ground that got seeded would germinate. Provide viable and beneficial plants until the following late Spring/ early Summer when the cool season plot dies out and the NWSG overtakes everything again.

I doubt you would even have to drill it if you caught a decent rain. I top sow a lot of wheat and have pretty decent luck

I think that idea would work just fine. After I mow shooting lanes in NWSGs in late summer I get plants coming up from the seedbank that deer brows really well. It should be even better with what you are suggesting.

Yep. Did it this year. Mow the lanes and plant the lanes. The NWSG comes back just fine the next year.

Possibly the Fall Release Blend from Green Cover. What I am looking for is something that will make good turkey and quail brooding habitat in the Spring. I had some Fall release that I planted in the Fall of 24' it looked damn good this Spring, perfect for what I was wanting. If nothing else a guy could probably drill some Buckwheat in the Spring and it would make a good brood habitat and then die out as the NWSG came back to life.
