Alligator to the far left side of that picture. They are just starting to come out. When they are out in full force, the yoyoing stops because they will get every fish and tear up your equipment.

Nice weather weekend. Seven of us, including my youngest grand daughter, got together for two nights yoyoing. A warm fire, sausage dogs, smores, a few adult beverages, enough filets to split between three couples, and a good time.
Can you demonstrate a yo-yo rig please?
Thanks

Yoyo tied in tree. Daughter is holding hook in left hand

IMG_3724.jpeg

The yoyo has a recoil spring in it. Put an appropriate size hook on snap swivel. A string is tied through a loop on top of yoyo and that string tied to a limb, dock, yoyo float or some other method to hold above water. Bait hook, pull out desired amount of line, set trigger. When fish bites, trigger trips and recoils spring fights fish and eventually pulls it to top of water.

Do you just set that yoyo rig and then leave it there like a trap that gets set off on its own?

Or do you somehow jig with that rig?

Set it and leave. In day time, we are required by law to be within sight or sound of them. At night, you can set them in eve and run them off and on all night or leave them and come back at daybreak. People use live bait - minnows, worms, chicken liver, etc. We can hang 25 per license holder.

Can they run underwater?

Might be good for icefishing

Yes, they can run underwater. I have always thought if you had a small frame, maybe from pvc or black plastic - over the hole so the yoyo was 8 or 10” above the water, it would hook the fish and pull it in. Problem is, only about 12’ of line. Might change the line to small diameter braid and get a lot more on. We like a bright white or chartreuse line so it is easy to see at night in a lght. We also put a reflective sticker on both sides of the yoyo so we can find them at night - when we usually fish

I see catfish connection sells them. I might get me some!

I have a few of those just in case. Live bait is the way to go. Even cast n retireve.

Guys did well. Looks like you were busy in the fillet table.

Crappie few and far between in NY.....

In 2020 I told myself I'd be at camp once a month. This year I am going to be a nice fishing trip each month april - november. Going for 5 party boat trips and 2 or 3 weekend's in the boat somewhere. scooped up a 12ft lund that fits in my hunting enclosed trailer.

I wish I had protected my skin from the sun this last trip.

We went to the headwaters and got into mostly natives.

This was taken at the dam. Not nearly as many natives, but a few brookies.

I'm jealous. Our ice is going to shit here in MN with the warm weather. I REALLY want to get tullibee fishing but I dont know if its gonna happen.

I’ve said this before. But a friend of mine once said crazy has no bounds in reference to what we do for deer. I love to fish 70 miles from the beach on 36+ hour trips. But I just wouldn’t volunteer to fish standing on ice. Probably love it if I tried it. But man that looks so much harder then a pair of shorts and a cold beer.

The advantage of ice fishing is where else can you guarantee your bait placement is exactly where you want it?

Your beverages are Always Cold!

The fish are immediately iced down.

The disadvantages are it’s cold, on smaller resivoirs with water flowing in can make it hard to get on the ice without waders.

The wind can present a lot of challenges.

Catch and release can be less than ideal,, flopping on ice and snow isn’t very good for their skin. And often the hooks are deep.

And in the snow later in season the sun can be brutal. I got really sunburned last trip.

We lived in Minnesota when I was a kid. My dad and his buddies would ice fish in a shack they had on the Mississippi River. He always said I was too young to go. Cant ever remember him bringing home a fish - but they sure took a lot of equipment - cigars, playing cards, whiskey, and beer😎

The only yo-yo you can use legally in Illinois is one operated on a string you fasten to you finger with a loop.

Texas does not allow them either, down here. I am 40 miles from TX and we have quite a few texas plates at the boat ramps on Friday and Sat night

Had a couple grandsons over last night, it was Eli’s first fishing experience.
The perch were hungry but the minnow bucket was the big draw for them…just like their Dad was when he was small. I would be catching bass like it was my job and he would be elbow deep in the minnow bucket.
