Finally found a brassica that my deer like

Native Hunter

5 year old buck +
Turnips just ignored.

Radishes nibbled at a little but not great.

But planted Rape this year and it's being eaten extra well.

What variety did you plant?

I have had good luck with dwarf Essex and Athena. My deer much prefer grains to greens though.

Have you tried groundhog radishes? My deer love all brassicas, but GRs are their favorite by far.

I've planted Daikon Radish and the deer nibble at them some, but not enough to justify planting. 95% of the crop ends up rotting.

Is there a difference between Groundhog Radish and Daikon Radish? I've never really known. I always assumed that Groundhog was a cultivar of the Daikon strain, but I really don't know.

I don't believe there is much difference if any.

We have had almost no rain, our brassicas are pretty pathetic this year.

I put in a mix of Winfred Forage brassica, Appin turnips, and Bayou kale on Aug 1, added DER and Driller radishes two weeks later, and finished with WR two weeks after that. Only one or two decent rain events since Aug 1 have the plot looks miserable as of this past weekend - around 4” tall and everything drooping from lack of rain. Rye appears to have been the worst to handle it. Most was browned and laid over. Finally supposed to get a half inch tonight. And this guy wasn’t helping the cause by any means either. 6AD9838D-3654-48B0-BFE1-B07D377966DA.jpeg

He looks awful tired. Good thing you let him rest.

I don’t know if there is a difference. As noted before, Ground Hog radishes are a favorite for my deer. I also like Bonar a lot and the deer do to, but not as much as the like GHR.

Radish is a staple for me. I plant my brassica plots about 75/25 radish to ptt. Once in a while i'll throw in a little kale but I've actually had better usage with spring planted kale. The ydon't hit it until winter though until it's tall and stalky for some reason.
