Yearling... With promise
My soil test for soybeans calls for 60/lbs to the acre of Phosphate. My co-op sells "triple super phosphate " at 0-46-0. I am not understanding how much of it I need to buy and spread on a 2.5 acre food plot. Can anyone help me?

By my calculation you need 326 pounds of 0-46-0. So about 7 bags. But that is off the top of my head, and I have been wrong before.

I was amazed at what my soil test stated. I cant emphasize enough on planting a cover crop in the fall. After planting a fall plot of peas oats and rye my spring soil test stated I needed to add ZERO pounds of fertilizer for my beans this spring. The nutrients are already in the soil you just need to plant something that sends roots down deep enough to pull them up so they are available to the plants for the following season. I will be over seeding covers in every plot no mater what every fall from here on out. There have been some pictures of throw and mow covers into clover on this board that I found impressive. I think that by doing this the fall before you plan on rotating your clovers to brassicas you shouldn't need to add any fertilizer. The same can prob be said for other crops if you choose the right covers to put down in the fall/spring for the next plot.

When you are calculating fertilizer requirements multiple the requirement (60 lbs per acre) x acreage (2.5) and that will equal your total (150 lbs). 0-46-0 has 23 lbs of phosphate in each 50 bag (46 lbs per hundred), so 150 lbs total divided by 23 lbs per 50 lb bag will equal 6.52 bags. So as stated, 7 50 lb bags will give you the required amount. Always remember, a 50 lb bag of fertilizer only has 1/2 the total amount of active ingredient stated, it is based on 100 lb of product. A bag of fertilizer is mostly filler, so when purchasing it, buy the highest percentage you can for the ingredients required, that is the most cost effective method.
