Drilling warm season grass in the fall ?

Anyone drilled a WSG mix in the fall?
Due to the soft ground in the spring and only a bigger tractor at our disposal, can we drill a mix of Big blue, little blue and Indian grass in the fall ?? I usually do it in May, but would love to knock it out this fall if possible.

Any experience would be appreciated:)

For my area... central 4b

Either drill in August, or wait till fall dormancy when soil temps drop below 40 degrees. Push much later than August an you can run into issues with seed germinating then an unexpected eairly frost can kill your seedlings before they had had an oppertunity to set root.

So far like how my August seedings have performed the best. But that is weather (rain) dependent as well.

This would be in Southern MI. Might have to wait till late Nov or so to get away with it ?

My 12 acre prairie is in Central Wisconsin near Almond. I had the entire 20 forbs and 7 grasses drilled in early September. Remember to be patient with prairie plantings. You will not see any real results until the third year.

I drilled mine in January last year.

LickCreek always said dont drill deep. You really want the seed just at the surface because the ground heaving in the winter freeze and thaw will suck it down.

Two years ago I hand spread 17 acres on SW seed in late Jan and early Feb on snow covered ground. Had sprayed in the fall to try and make a last kill.

Have been very pleased with the germination and results. Not real tall this year probably 2'-4' in most areas. All plant have multi stems and assuming it has been been establishing root structure.
