Thinking back, the best dove shoot we ever had was in a first year cutover where we planted wheat, rye and oats on all of the logging roads and two plots in a +/- 30 acre area. May have planted a total of 3 acres and we didn't do anything after the fall planting except drive the atv down the roads and through the plot to knock some seeds down a week before the season opened.

we just dont have doves in my area like we used to. 15 yrs ago we wondered how quick we would kill a limit in the morning. Quite a few under 15 min. Then it got where we wondered if everyone would kill a limit. Then it got where we just hoped we had a decent shoot - six or eight birds apiece. Last two years we wonder if we are going to see a limit. Saw three last year first day.
Do you get them later in the season? I would have a hard time planting as much as you do just to see a few birds. It would be different if we were shooting limits in an hour or two.
With rain in the forecast, I took a few hours off yesterday to complete the burn. Of course the forecast has changed now and I could have waited until today when I already have 1/2 day off. The neighbor cut it a couple hours before I got there and that helped it dry out. With the cool nights, it had a lot of dew on it. Really happy with the burn and the amount of seed on the ground. Saw a few birds on it when I got there and he said there were several in and out while he was cutting. I started with a back burn on the downwind side, and once I was happy with the buffer, I went to the upwind side.

No, we dont get any winter doves anymore. Used to get a lot. This is timber and cattle country - no row crop. 35 miles away, I am in a duck lease and there are tens of thousands of acres of row crop down there - and a fair many doves. It is crazy how things change so much. I have a couple waterfowl impoundments. We used to shoot 100 or more ducks every year. Have not see a duck on my place during season in four years now.

The kids kept busy today shootin doves (the mosaic burned worked) and catching fish. Made for a great dinner!
I will definitely be planting the upper pasture next year.

I had 20-30 on the fields today. Definitely an improvement from recent weeks. I think we will try it next weekend.
Disappointed with my plot. The small seed is looking great, but most of the large seed washed with the heavy rain. I should have over seeded it today with rain in the forecast, but was running behind schedule. Got two cameras out and checked the zero on two rifles plus my hand gun before I left.

I have those thoughts about some chore every time I leave my place. Yesterday I was trying to race around and get some spraying done for an old field disking this fall. I cut it short to get home and spend some time with my wife, who was gone shopping for 2 hrs after I got home
