Deer love sugar beets

It looks like sugar beets to me, but I am not sure what you can spray it with. Was it RR sugar beets?

They don't look like the sugar beets I planted this spring nor the ones I see growing in MN that I drive by.

Don't think so. Just spray them anyway. If nothing is left in a couple of week you will be ahead of the game for fall plantings.

Don't know for sure but at least it's a broadleaf. Foxtail is making mine look like a putting green and I won't be able to spray for 7 more days :(

I sprayed mine on Saturday. I was also having a hard time identifying the beets from the weeds because it is my first go at it also. I returned to check out the plot yesterday afternoon and it looks like i'm going to have a decent stand. They look a bit to thin but time will tell. If there is some bare patches come late July early August I'll plant something else in there to fill out the plot. Time will tell I guess. I'm thinking that with all the rain we have had this summer I'm going to need to put down some additional N. I'm going to wait a while for that though. The leaves as of now are nice and dark.

I'd spray if I could and there are weeds showing. I doubt that in 11 days a single beet is showing. Ed's directions were to spray at 3 and 6 weeks post planting. At 3 weeks the beets can't be more than tiny sprouts so gly must not bother them at any stage.

Bill ... are you referring to RR sugar beets? Ed was big on his RR beets. Not sure how you could spray at 6 weeks post planting if they were not RR.

Let me know your thoughts.

How did you identify?

All leafed plants have defined leaf structure that allow identification ... shape, smooth vs serrated edge, vein structure, etc. What did you use to I.D.?

I very well could be wrong, I just googled sugar beet plants, and compared it to his picture, they looked close when I looked at it.

I'll try to get one soon. I never think of taking pictures of a lot of stuff until after the fact. I live less than 5 min from the property so wont be a problem. Prob going to go check out what if any flood damage happened last night. I cant believe the amount of rain we have had in June. It has to be one of the wettest on record.

It will be getting over seeded with a mix by cover crop solutions containing radishes, triticale, and crimson clover late summer anyway.

Took a couple pictures of the sugar beets while I was in The Valley spraying my soybeans which by the looks of it will not have many pods come fall the way the deer are hitting it. It will be getting over seeded with a mix by cover crop solutions containing radishes, triticale, and crimson clover late summer anyway.

Here is my plot as of today. Just got back. I'm planning on a total failure as they've been in the ground about 4 weeks.
I did spray hot just in case.

If I was planting foxtail this would be a complete success! Worst case it will be a clean spot for rye and oats later this summer.

Mine look pretty thin for being in the ground over a month. It will be interesting to see how much they fill out over the next month. I'm guessing I'll lay down a pound or two of ptt in early august

Mine looked about the same. Mine weren't RR, but I gave them a stiff shot anyway. Time to move on.....

Oh no, I'm committed now. I'll grow some beets if it kills me....maybe not this year though!

foxtail looks like a front lawn........ yeouch. I hate that stuff, 4 inches high this week, 2 feet tall and full of seeds two weeks later. 1.5 oz a gallon 41% active, at leas it is easy to kill.

I used 3 quarts per acre because I was mad at it!
