Buying my own place isn't in the cards for the near future unfortunately. I am going to be buying into the family business this next year and that will for the most part take up any available money I have every month. I do have a couple of buddies that leased a property this past year. I may talk to them and see If I can get in on leasing with them. Not sure the property can handle an extra hunter though.

ST .... sounds like you are making good choices and setting the appropriate priorities. Life stages, family, etc. all present decisions to be made. Sometimes you have to let go of something to realize that there is a better option down the road.

Based on what I have seen from you, and learned about your approach and analytical thought process, you are very good at dealing with set backs and re-adjusting your sails to find the right wind.

Better to keep peace in the family and find your own temporary island of "solace" .... been there my self, keep the faith and good luck!

I would personally move on. You’re basically already hunting public land as is, so might as well do the real thing next year. It’s very liberating, all of a sudden that 3 year old is a trophy. Heck any legal deer is a trophy.

Divide the land into 3rds and make everyone responsible for their own plots and only hunt your part?

Keep on keeping on and just try to beat them to the bucks?

Stop plotting and hunting the place altogether?

Hide some plots and don't tell them about them?


Talk with them and tell them your frustrations, see if they understand and offer a reasonable solution?

I’m going to keep planting the plots over there I’m just not going to hunt it. Going to start looking for a new place soon. I have one in mind that I’m thinking I can get on. I may even offer to lease it just to make sure I have it to myself. Well myself, my boys, and the trespassers coming off of the state land it borders

Why not stop the plots and the work? Go back to hunting like most people did years ago. Hunt deer without habitat improvements.

The farm could still potentially produce mature bucks. It may be more difficult for your uncles to kill bucks and if they did kill one, it wouldn’t be based on your hard work.

That’s fine for the future but as of next year the area is shot out. Plus my plotting only takes about two weekends a year. On the other hand if I keep plotting for them they will get the impression that the plot and the hunting location is “theirs” if I’m not around to hunt the place. Regardless I need to find a second option. The place I want to get in on I know the family and have hunted it in the past so that is always a plus.

Did your uncle find the buck he hit? It sounds like your sugar beets worked as intended, but you just weren't the guy in the stand. Was there just too much pressure there from your uncles or why didn't you try to get out there and hunt during the muzzleloader season?

I gave up. Can’t figure out how to keep resistant pig weed from taking over.

My uncle was hunting every day. He kinda took the spot over that is over looking the plot. I was holding off until we saw single digits to get the deer up on their feet early (usually when the temperature are mild they come out at about that time when there isn't enough shooting light) After hearing from him about where and when he was hunting I realized there wasn't any room for me. (there is really only the one spot to capitalize on the beets)

I have another plot of beets on our other property that the deer are starting to find. I will give that a try in another week or so. I'm not expecting much as the area is pretty shot out.

My uncle never did find the buck he shot. He went out the next day and found about 6 different beds he had bedded down in and ended up jumping him. He ran down the hill and back up the other side onto the neighbors so he couldn't have been hurt to bad. From what he told me I am assuming it is a low hit on the front R. leg. I'll put a camera up on the plot when I get the chance. Maybe if he starts coming back in I can get him with my bow.

Might want to consider liberty beans for next year if pigweed was starting. It’s more expensive but worth every penny if you can kick the pigweeds butt. Liberty looks expensive but it’s 1 qt/acre compared to 2qts/acre of gly.

RR beans won't help your pigweed problem, go with Liberty or the new stuff that is both Liberty and RR.

Thank your lucky stars! My pigweed drinks up gly like lemonade and asks for more. It’s almost like feeding it because it kills most anything that competes with it and it’s watching and laughing at me.
