CWD

I left all the economic collapse and doom porn sites because I was tired of reading depressing news. Now I see it is here too just in another form. Hey I understand CWD is real and think its great that it’s being studied but I think it’s too late to try and stop the spread of the disease thru deer management restrictions. Just look at the attempt to stop the spread of the emerald ash borer by restricting fire wood movement. That was a total failure.

I live and hunt one county away from confirmed CWD cases and realize it will be here soon. I only hunt deer on my land and the left over carcass stays on my land. This is as far as I will go to help with limiting the spread of CDW. My neighbors and I are finally working together to promote QDM and increase the number of mature bucks, while the CDW experts think we should eliminate more of the mature bucks.

I’ve been working towards this deer goal for a long time and I refuse to let fear of the unknown ruin my dream. I figure I have maybe 20 more good years of hunting left in me, my sons have moved away and have no real interest in hunting anymore. Considering this, I don’t think CWD will have much of an impact on me.

I realize a lot of people are concerned about it will impact the future generations deer hunting. Well we all live in an ever faster changing world. It’s sad to say it, but family traditions are quickly disappearing. My guess is in less than three more generations, deer hunting will be practically gone in America. I wouldn’t be surprised if soon you will be hear talk of using some kind of gene drive to exterminate deer in CWD zones.

I hope I didn’t depress too many people here. The moral of my rant is get out there and hunt like there's no tomorrow!

Yeah that’s why Baker started this thread. The CWD drama was showing here and there. Astutely he wanted to give it a place. I doubt it but hopefully this thread is the place.

I guess I do understand the need for a thread like this for discussing CDW. Maybe it’s a good way to help people deal with the depressing reality at hand. Kind of like dealing with the loss of a family member or close friend. I just have a hard time listing to theoretical predictions from research experts that deliberately try to instill fear in the general public for there own benefit ( more funding). It reminds me of the climate change debate and I’m sure this topic is just as polarized. So now everybody knows which side of the fence I’m on and I hope we can all still be friends.

I doubt deer hunting will ever stop in the US.

I agree. At least not for the affluent
You bet. The promise of public opportunity has been replaced by the need to make money off gov't property. States are swiftly moving towards zero tolerance when it comes to economic losses to wildlife. Deer are a big part of that.

Maybe my comment on the future of deer hunting was a little biased due the fact that it's looking like my family tree is a dead end when it comes to hunting. No one can predict the future with any real certainty. The only thing constant with the future is change is enviable. Hopefully it is for the better.

does it have to be family?
i‘d bet there are adults or kids that would love to try hunting, but don’t have access.
sure, public land... but for a beginner, it’s overwhelming, and with little chance for success most wont even try or give up early.

my son is 18, heading off to college soon. I hope he keeps hunting, but we no longer have the family 90 acres we used to hunt on. As stated above, hunting for the affluent. I hope to someday get some land. But TBH, I like fishing more, hence the cabin. .

I have coached almost my entire adult life, so I plan to mentor hunting and fishing during my empty nest years. And that doesn’t just mean kids. I have adult coworkers that have really taken to fishing after being showed some “good spots” and good techniques. Unfortunately all the pros, etc. are always just trying to sell you stuff, without actually teaching. Lack of success will lead less interest.

Thanks for the article. As soon as they mentioned the Minnesota DNR doing research I knew it was a lost cause----the blind leading the blind. MN DNR & MN OSHA should both be done away with completely in my opinion. The world would be a far better place. Plus qdma is an absolute joke----misleading the sheeple every step of the way to line their own damn pockets.

I imagine they'll work they way over to habitat destruction at some point. If they really want to get rid of deer, they need to get rid of deer habitat. The existence of fencelines, wetlands, old homesteads, edible landscaping, and windbreaks should be dealt with as well.

Cost sharing to remove postage stamp habitats?

No cases for 2019.

“With all the testing there was no evidence of Chronic Wasting Disease in New York state during 2019 as hunters in New York harvested an estimated 224,190 deer during the 2019-20 hunting seasons, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
DEC tested 2,658 harvested deer across the state and found no evidence of CWD in the herd. DEC partners with cooperating meat processors and taxidermists in obtaining samples for testing each year.”
