Cwd podcast that is actually very good

Definitely seems that way. How can they say dumping piles on the ground is ok, but say a gravity feeder is not ok?
Yep. Either they want to come off looking like they are proactive or they don’t want to have a full baiting cult mutiny on their hands

Missouri only does mandatory CWD testing in select counties that they are monitoring. The way it was explained to me for our county (which just dropped the mandatory testing this year), the reason they do mandatory testing for only the firearm opener is because that is the weekend most deer are killed, and testing is prohibitively expensive to do for the entire deer season.

It seems if the prions are nearly impossible to kill that you could have an intern chuck samples in the freezer all season and then test after season once all samples are in. That would open the sampling up while still concentrating the testing.

CWD testing is certainly expensive and these state agencies aren't exactly flush with cash. MN has been mandating testing of deer registered on opening weekend of gun season(in some zones) for a few years. They get the most bang for their buck that way. No different than law enforcement ramping up drunk driving enforcement on New Year's Eve.

I think this could work, but I'd think most hunters would want to know if their deer is positive for CWD before consuming the meat. I don't get the impression it's meant to be a comprehensive survey, and it's really just a way to keep track of some outbreak areas.

I guess I didn’t get the sense they were testing for the consumption of meat. I thought they were testing to see if deer had CWD. Every deer they don’t test is getting consumed without knowing which is just as bad as delayed test results.

I think the reason is likely both, IMO.

The logistics of extracting a lymph node is the toughest part. In WI where they've been testing for decades now, there are locations every 10 miles so it isn't such a nuisance for the hunter to get the test. Then the biologists or whoever drive to the testing sites weekly to recover the extracted lymph nodes, doesn't seem very efficient in the end, but that's the realty of it.

I've been asking everyone I know. Basically very few around here test their deer because the majority of lockers say they only accept untested deer.

Mutiny is a good word. I can’t help but believe the agencies feel a large portion of hunters would quit if they banned baiting. It’s a drug. Many hunters get a taste and can’t function without it.

With that said, back on the CWD topic… I guess I’m of the impression that in real hot spots like NW Arkansas, the disease has made bucks older than 3.5 a literal impossibility. Is that not true? Whether a guy is worried about contracting the disease or not, age structure impacts like that are a big big problem for the sport and for my enjoyment.

Those are indeed some scary results coming from that region.
The positive is that it's been around for 25+ years in southwest WI and there are still mature bucks around in those areas.

Just checked the testing results for Iowa, Sauk, Dane, and Richland counties in WI, ground zero area for the initial positive tests... positive results as high as 37% in Richland as low as 18% in Dane county. These are the 2025 results with more tests pending.

What I've *heard* is that the testing results come in higher initially during archery season because the likelihood of older age class bucks are taken. Then during gun season the does and younger bucks getting harvested mellow out the test results a bit.

Any idea why that area of Arkansas would have higher positive rates that other areas of the country like sw Wisconsin?

Do landowners there now manage for rabbits and squirrels instead of deer? I’m interested to hear what changes happen after cwd rates at those levels.

On the bright side, if there will be a natural solution it is likely to come from areas with a high mortality rate. It would really suck to deer hunt in those areas though.

I don’t know any specifics beyond what the podcast in the OP said… and I’ve forgotten some of that.
