Cwd podcast that is actually very good

My wife works at Mayo in one of the brain units.

One of the doctors in the cjd area has some strong feelings on eating cwd positive meat, so I’ll listen to him.

Everyone else is free to make their own decisions though.

Can you elaborate on that? I'd like to know everything he has to say on the subject.

I think my wife was showing off my kids buck pictures and a dr. had some questions about us eating deer and cwd. My wife really knows nothing about the deer we shoot and eat or cwd, so it was odd she was telling me this story that night. So I actually paid attention when she was telling me how her day went!

It was just lunchroom talk without any peer reviewed studies brought up or anything like that. So no new information, just a dr in that area of study referencing his concern and basically reiterating the standard guidelines to avoid eating cwd positive meat.

They see many people die from brain diseases, so they are very aware of the severity of the disease even though the likelihood of getting the disease is extremely low. It the dr. sees a potential link worthy of bringing up, I’ll listen as it costs me nothing to throw away a future cwd positive deer.

I also agree with the other side of the argument that the overall risk is so low it isn’t worth worrying about. It very well might be. But if you dealt with the 1 in a million patients every day the risk may be viewed differently.

I'm listening, and always open to changing my mind. Would just be nice for something of substance to come out. You would think top Mayo docs could prove something already. Millions of people eat venison snack sticks every year. Every stick that came from a locker has the prions in it. Everyone I know eats those things whether they hunt or not. Everyone asks for deer sticks and jerky.

I had never heard of prions until today. Article said they destroy surgical instruments they suspect are contaminated with. Dayam.

How many butcher shops are tossing knives after cutting a deer? Zero. Deer are processed then it's right back to beef and pigs. Everything is contaminated.

Since it’s so rare there must be another step in the deal other than just ingesting.

Or some folks have the right gene or whatever. Hope they figure out a cure either way, just sounds terrible.

I would counter by saying the dose generally makes the poison, and right now the best we can say is that at least some dose is not a concern for the vast majority of people. Some people may only be genetically susceptible to CJD after magnitudes of exposure.

If a causal link is never found, it will have been quite a bit of waste of venison and butchering equipment. Regardless, I would prefer to not be patient A or B or whatever in some future research publication talking about the first confirmed case caused by CWD in deer.

I’ve never had my deer tested and therefore never had to make a decision on whether to consume a positive deer or not. I suspect I would go ahead and eat it.
If the DNR was that worried about it maybe they should do more than put useless baiting bans into effect and try and get hunters to kill more deer. Personally, not a bait hunter but I think the policy is useless.
Maybe stop allowing captive deer farms for one. But, how much effort and money has been put into trying to find a cure? Or a better way to stop it?
Shawano County, WI had zero positives until 2021. We have had 1-3 since I believe. The latest 30 minutes from my land. Maybe my attitudes will change if it becomes a major issue in the county. But, for me my bigger fear is what are the DNR going to do to try and slow it in the area. We don’t fill all the permits they give out now in the county. Sharpshooters? I call BS.
They need better tools to stop this disease than let’s kill more deer!

Right or wrong, my thinking has been to let them mark the map so they know hunters are working on the herd. I wish my neighbors would but most of them have said no in the past. Do you guys have in person registration stations still? MN and WI have gone to call in, have been for quite some time.

Yes the check stations have been reopened since the chronic was detected. But only for gun 1 and gun 2. For the other 4 gun seasons it's not important to test those deer.

Kind of off topic, but I was considering starting the baiting next season. My habitat for the fall was what I would consider pretty darn good. But, the deer were noticeably using the neighbors' baited properties more. Are you going to do something different to try and combat the pulling power of your neighbors baiting?

No I don’t suppose. I just think when you have a rifle season in the rut it really doesn’t matter. Bucks are on the move and visible and probably checking all the neighbors bait for does and an easy meal just like they’d check yours. I’m jaded into currently believing; you can’t outbait your neighbor, you can’t out habitat them, you can’t out strategy them by hunting smart or keeping pressure down. The only hope is enough or the right bucks simply run the gauntlet for three weeks and some survive.
I’m not going to pay for this, but I’d like to see what guys like Bronson Strickland and Craig Harper and other “experts” would say, especially off the record. I think they’d even admit it’s a luck game when you don’t control a thousand plus acres. No amount of pretty little forbs and thick escape cover and yadda yadda is going to save a buck when he’s horny for 21 days out of 365.

I agree. It sure seems like, in areas with even "just ok" cover, easy food attracts does. Does attract bucks during the rut, and the rifle season is during the rut. I would think, if a department really believed baiting concentrated deer enough to compound a CWD spreading vector, they would shut down all baiting.
