Cutleaf teasel

Telemark

5 year old buck +
Well this year the cutleaf teasel has gotten totally out of control. In one corner of the field, the teasel has formed a total monoculture that is basically impenetrable to humans and any type of game animal. I think it's a refuge for mice and voles, because I found a lot of girdled saplings nearby. And the teasel patch is spreading, threatening to take over the entire field.

Does anyone have experience battling cutleaf teasel on a large scale? Internet says triclopyr and 2,4D are effective. Can I combine both in the same sprayer, or do I have to do two applications? Or do I have to choose one or the other? Can I spray it in November?

Never heard of this one and had to look it up. I know you can mix triclopyr and 2,4D and may also want to look at dicamba in addition to a NIS.

Crossbow herbicide contains both triclopyr and 2,4D. Those are the active ingredients that are mixed together.

I wouldn't spray in November. I would spray mid summer.

Ok, I'll mix up a full dose of triclopyr and 2,4D with a squirt of dish soap and go to town on them in July. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the link. I'll try to get them again in the fall and Spring with the same mix. It would be a lot easier to spray them at the rosette stage.

They have been particularly bad this year in my area also I don’t have them my properties but they are horrible in many road ditches.

I got back to Ohio for a few days last week, and I was shocked by how much I saw. I don't know if I just never noticed it before, or if this is a bad year for it, but teasel was growing all along I-75, and the field where I have the problem patch turned out to have several more patches. I did what I could to knock back a good amount before it made viable seed, but I will just have to get back out there in Fall and spray the rosettes. The area I sprayed in June was nearly bare dirt, so the herbicide seems to be effective.

Unfortunately, a whole bunch of marestail popped up in the field as well. I sprayed most of it, but we'll see how it goes.

Our county weed guy seems to think the teasel is reaping the benefits of a couple drought years in a row and this year being exceptional wet has triggered a major germination of dormant seed.
