Conspiracy theorys, where do you stand?

I believe Trump will impose 10 or 15% tariffs through another avenue/code ? I personally like the tariffs but I think they should be less than 20%

The revenue it brings in, balances the budget somewhat . Yes it’s a tax, & everyone pays it. Including corporations who were avoiding taxes !

The biggest problem with our tax system is that less than 50% of Americans pay any taxes . This is a way to collect from everyone.

I realize it can hurt the lower class in some ways, however, they benefit greatly by others paying taxes, yet are not always appreciative of that . In reference to a recent article … from Duluth, MN, a person on the system can collect up to $45k (including free housing, food, utilities, healthcare, childcare, etc..)

This is a small revenue generator, & I actually think Wall Street wants most of the tariffs to stick .

(Not to forget to mention the benefits of buying and building in the USA 🇺🇸)
I respectfully disagree completely about the tariffs. Economists almost unanimously think across the board tariffs are a bad idea, and that says something because they rarely agree so consistently on anything.

I don't think it is so clear that "Wall St" likes them. You can find the days when Trump announced new tariffs by looking at dips in the market plotted over time. Regardless, the economists are the ones studying the impacts of tariffs for a living and their opinion should matter more, in my opinion.

The 50% of Americans not paying taxes is a tired straw-man talking point. Yes, many do not pay federal income tax, but they generally pay state income taxes, and more importantly taxes on everything else that are not income like sales tax and property taxes. Tariffs are effectively a regressive tax, and will disproportionately affect poorer people more as the tariffs cause prices to increase and these people will be spending a higher percentage of their income on taxes.

I am a fan of simplifying all forms of taxes whenever possible. I think having carve outs and exemptions only creates opportunities to be exploited (at best) or they further lead to corruption. Targeted tariffs can make sense, but it should be congress deciding when and how to enact them.

I have not seen the tariff increase in my daily life. I travel in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, the Dakotas… what’s higher ?

Gas is lower, that makes up for a huge budget item ? Besides beef, which is up do to crazy demand …name something that is a daily budget item that would affect the lower class ?

Apartment rents are actually down in my area, so gas and rents down is huge !

(I disagree with you on taxes, we need to collect from everyone, even if it’s a small amount) our budget is maxed. We hand out way too much free stuff !!

My office is right by a Casey’s, I see them roll out of bed at 10:30 am and then stop in for some smokes, & a breakfast pizza with their pajama pants on. Most of these people can work . It’s ridiculous!

Are you trying to say that's not the same as what Obama and then pretendeders that ran the government under Biden did?

Or, are you saying it was ok under them but not Trump?
I said exactly what you quoted. In addition, I think it's a really good thing when separate branches of government put checks on the other branches, regardless of party.

I would like checks and balances to be uniformly enforced by a neutral judiciary across the country.

If I misconstrued your position, I apolgize.

Any plan for picking a neutral judiciary?

Judges are supposed to be neutral, but we all know that they aren't. From the local municipal judge all the way to Supreme Court they all lean one way or another.

I've said it here a bunch of times before, the best thing Trump has done is beat Hilary in 2016 and keep her from cemented the SC as radical liberals for the rest of our generation. Today's decision doesn't change that in any way, IMO.

Yeah, but it can't work. The partisionship nearly requires the two sides to force the judges that support their positions into office.

One thing might be to get all dark money out of all elections, especially DA's and prosecution.

Where do you think the $175 Billion that was collected came from?

Most things affected by the tariffs were a few percentage point increases in price, which may not be immediately recognizable to most people. I personally think it would be hard for anyone to miss the insane rise in price of aluminum in the last year. Regardless, economists study these effects and publish papers that are reviewed by their peers, which is better than relying on our own observations. The source that I see cited the most is The Pricing Lab. It is published by a team of economists, and lead by a Research Fellow Economist from Harvard's Business School. This compares prices of items that are imported compared to similar items that are made domestically in order to track the effects of the tariffs in near real-time. You can see the table for items they have been tracking and the price changes for imported and domestic goods in that link.

If you're looking for more of a summary, Yale's Budget lab summarizes the effects of the tariffs and regularly releases a report of their findings. Before today's IEEPA Supreme Court ruling, they estimated the cost increase from the tariffs to have been $1,751 for the average American household. It's worth pointing out that many tariffs were only in effect for a few months and they still increased costs that much.

It’s cheaper for me to get 2x8’s than 2x6’s cause the 6’s come out of Canada after the tariffs.

Kevin Hassett says the people reporting that the tariffs are paid by the consumers should be punished. I think Kevin Hassett should go pound sand.

We don't import gas and there is a carveout for the beef.
We're footing the bill for the tariffs. Just like we're going to foot the bill for the big fence at the border.

I don’t mind footing the bill for the Fence. It’s paying the people @bwoods11 was talking about that roll out of bed at 10:30 and use my money and your money to buy cigarettes and beer and sit on the couch the rest of the day.

The point I was trying to make was the big lie that Mexico was going to pay for it and most Americans bought it.
