5 year old buck +
Glad your son is fine, I've told my kids and wife the same, "just drive through it if you can't slow down stop safely."
I have hit two deer already this year, let me rephrase that...two deer have hit me this year. Both coming home from work, one on the corner like your son did-nice buck broke its right back leg and his body smacked the hood, the second T-boned me right at the pillar between front and back door, scared the crap out of me. Its butt swung around and dented back quarter on car. Two weeks apart!
Both deer hobbled away.
Since we have moved, I drive country roads to work. In a year and a half I've hit a half dozen raccoons, a few possum, a few cats, a couple bunnies and a bunch of birds, car is a 2014 Cruze with 248K miles on it that gets 35+ mpg and has luckily been a great trouble free work car, I bought it new just for work...if it was a plane it would be an ACE now with all the kills it has!

I only fixed the headlight to get it back on the road with the high miles it has.

I’ve used stainless steel wire to hold up the split front bumper.
I’m about one fat suicidal raccoon away from having to get a new work car. Trying to make it last another year and half until retirement but nature is against me.
